We were called Activity Academy up to 5 years ago, but since then our name has changed to Newton School for Children, Inc. 7. Janna says:

    Hi —

So glad I stumbled on this blog!

My family and I are considering relocating to Newton. I have heard some very mixed if not negative things about how hard it is to assimilate into the community there. Any advice on who talk to me about how hard it is to make friends and feel a part of the community?

Would really appreciate the help. Thanks so much, Janna

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Janna,
I haven’t heard of anyone having difficulty assimilating into the community especially if you have kids since it’s easy to meet people through kids and their schools and activities. In terms of ethnicity, there is great diversity which is great. There is also socio-economic diversity which is unusual for a Western suburb of Boston. One easy way to meet people is to volunteer for something and there are lots and lots of opportunities for that. There are also a wide range of churches of every imaginable denomination which will give you an instant community. There are a bunch of smaller churches (let me know if you need recs) that especially are eager to build their congregation and would be warmly welcoming.

  8. Nanette says:

First of all, thank you for all the great information you provide. My family and I moved to Newton in June of 2011, and I have benefited from many of your posts.

I know that you are into exercise so I wanted to suggest that you check out the best Pilates studio around, Mara Core Conditioning located at 1108 Beacon Street in Newton Highlands. The owner, Mara Iancovici, is an amazing instructor, and I credit her with rehabilitating my knee after an accident.

Mara’s tagline is Look Better. Feel Better. Think Better and since I have been going to sessions with her, I totally agree!.

The website is http://www.maracoreconditioning.com/ and you can reach her by email at info@maracoreconditioning.com or phone 617-852-6785.

    Best,
    Nanette Fridman

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Nanette,
Thanks for the heads up about Mara Core Conditioning. I hadn’t heard of it and it sounds wonderful!

  9. Ted Lewis says:

My family is moving to the Boston area, and Newton is among the towns we are considering. We would like to live in an ethnically diverse area, but we see that Newton’s demographics suggest a lacking in this department. Are there any ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Newton? Much obliged for any responses.

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Ted,
Actually, Newton has the most ethnically diverse population for a western suburb of Boston, especially compared to neighbors Needham, Wellesley, Weston and the like. Here’s the stats on ethnicity: http://ilovenewton.com/ethnicity-make-up-in-newton/

      White alone – 69,123 (81.4%)
      Asian alone – 8,543 (10.1%)
      Hispanic – 2,995 (3.5%)
      Black alone – 2,052 (2.4%)
      Two or more races – 1,434 (1.7%)
      Other race alone – 461 (0.5%)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone – 153 (0.2%)
      American Indian alone – 34 (0.04%)

What percentages were you looking for in a community? Ethnic diversity and good schools are a tough combination to get. One thing about Newton is that there is also socio-economic diversity.

I believe that Lexington has diversity numbers that are similar. Brookline has more diversity being closer to Boston but it’s more expensive if you look at price per square foot, especially by lot size.

In terms of villages with higher ethic diversity, I think West Newton and Newtonville would quality as well as other neighborhoods with a higher proportion of renters. Countryside Elementary School, I understand, has a large Asian population. I think Bowen Elementary School does as well. Lincoln-Elliot Elementary School might also have the highest African American population too. I’d need to research to be sure though. Your realtor might have better information.

Hi my name is Rich Shaw from Newton Animations & Video here in Newton, MA. I wanted to reach out to let parents from Newton know our 3D Animation Academy for Kids is enrolling students for our next session set to begin next month. In these beginner classes kids are taught state of the art 3D animation using Cinema 4D (free student licenses from Cinema 4D are provided). Kids are also exposed to other movie making techniques using various green screen technologies. Our current students love our classes and come from as far as Canton, MA. We are unaware of any program that comes close to the value proposition we offer. Our promotional video can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qDJFlm5X4Y&feature=youtu.be

Newton Animation & Video’s 3D Animation Academy for Kids next session starts Monday November 17, 2014. Classes for kids in grades 4 to 6 will be held on Mondays from 3:30 PM to 5:15 PM and for kids in grade 6 and higher from 6:30 PM to 8:15 PM on the Newton/Needham line. These beginner classes will be pre-requisites for certain intermediate and advanced level courses set to begin in January 2015. Parents are encouraged to read very positive reviews of our program from our current students and their parents on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/NewtonAnimations.

Newton Animations & Video gives plenty back too. We have run Children’s News Network since 2011 (which can be found at http://www.childrensnewsnetwork.com) which provides 100% commercial free news and current events video for kids…with video content we purchase from the Associated Press. You will never find a banner ad, commercial or other distraction on Children’s News Network. We also run an online animation service called NewsToons (the anchors from Children’s News Network) where personalized narrated 30 second animations can be purchased for as little as $50. There is no service we know of that comes close. This is a great way to recognize a kid’s effort, success or milestone. You can find us at http://www.newstoons.net (this is not promoted on Children’s News Network as it has always been commercial free).

Any parents interested in enrolling their children in our class can visit our website at http://www.newtonanimations.com or call us at 781-708-1255 to learn more.

Thank you very much in advance for your consideration and for taking the time to read this e-mail. This is a great website Mia….I hope it is OK I posted like this. I think what you are doing for the community is great. I would be happy to provide a simple animation for your website if you think it would help. Please call me or send me an e-mail. It is just great people like me from Newton can reach out (assuming this post was ok). Thank you again.

    Kindest regards,

    Rich Shaw

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Rich,
Thanks for letting me know about your great animation and video classes for kids! They sound terrific!

  14. Brian Hodgson says:

    Hello,

I was hoping you might be interested in a social site, I have started in Newton called Solocho. The mission to to connect neighborhoods by enabling people who need chores done to hire middle and high school kids from their community.

It was developed from experience my kids had shoveling snow for others based on the city phone list. People can post chores ant students in their neighborhood get notifications for the chore they are interested in can apply.

We are running a pilot in Newton and although this winter has been tough the users of Solocho have been growing quite nicely.

Below provides some insight into our philosophy.

Solocho is founded on the principle that social capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_capital) is critical to strong communities and neighborhoods. As kids we made money delivering papers, shoveling snow, raking leaves. We went door to door (without our parents) selling stuff to raise money for our prom or sports team. Now that we are older we need stuff done, and it is hard to find a local kid who will mow our lawn. As a result, we built Solocho to help “get stuff done”. Finally, you may be wondering about our name: Solocho. The root words are:
Social—as in social capital, knowing your neighbors
Local—being able to leverage and help people in your community
    Chores—getting stuff done

  15. I wanted to ensure everyone in the school districts Williams, Burr, Franklin, Horace Mann, Lincoln Eliot, Underwood, Ward, Cabot or Pierce are aware that the three little leagues: Newton Central, Newton North, and Newton West have merged and are now called Newton Little League. As a result there are now two little leagues in Newton (the second being Newton South East Little League).

Registration for both leagues are open. The leagues provide recreational t-ball and baseball for boys and girls ages 4 through 12.

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Brian,
Thanks so much for the heads up on Little League. My kids don’t play baseball or softball so I not up on the latest.

  16. Jane H. says:

    Hello, Pragmatic Mom.

I live in Newton, too, and I’d love if you could add my blog to your blogroll. The website for the gravitar is the website for my book, but my personal blog is http://janerewrites.blogspot.com/

    Great day at NewtonServes yesterday!

    Thanks.

    Jane

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Jane,
Yes, I’ll add! I generally check the blogs from time to time and delete the ones that are not active. I’m just looking for blogs that post at least once a month, fyi.

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Jane,
Actually I just added your blog and then I noticed you are already on the blog roll! 🙂

  17. Jane H. says:

Hello, PM! Yes, that is my dog’s blog. This one is my author blog, my voice, and I deal with many more issues than just dogs! Actually, the one thing I do not deal with on my author blog is dogs. I leave that for other blogs. Do you know how I found your blog this time? I found your daughter’s blog, in which she does book reviews. I was looking for reviewers for the book (grade 5 and up) and her blog came up! Then I followed to your blog and was really surprised that we’re right here in the same (great) town! I did NewtonServes on Sunday. It’s a great city.

    • Pragmatic Mom says:

      Hi Jane,
Oops! I thought it was the same one. I’ll add it now. LOL, my daughter’s blog, PickyKidPix, gets a lot of traffic. 🙂

  18. Dee Mallon says:
