    Join us July 2627 for a weekend of family fun at the third annual Boston Summer Arts Weekend in Copley Square.

    Presented by Citizens Bank, this free festival brings the arts to all of Boston through events and performances tailored to audience members of all ages.

    Boston Summer Arts Weekend 2014

    Boston Summer Arts Weekend is the perfect outdoor event for families. Highlights from this year’s family events include:

    Local favorite and PBS Kids star, SteveSongs, who will kick off the main stage events at 11 am.

    Children’s entertainer Debbie Cavalier, of Debbie and Friends, will engage the audience through her traditional story-telling through original song.

    World-renowned comedy jugglers the Gizmo Guys, who will certainly wow the crowd with their humor and technique.

    Various dance and music performances on the Fountain Stage from groups such as Zumix, Harney Academy of Irish Dance and hip-hop dance group Lil’ Phunk.

    All of your favorite characters from WGBH programming like Arthur, Curious George and Word Girl will be there too!

    The Centre Street Food Pantry and the Newton Food Pantry need food during the summertime.

    Schools are not running during the summer, and kids who get some of their meals at school still need to eat!

    Examples of nonperishable items to donate are:

    – Peanut butter and jelly

    Canned meals: soups, stews

    – Grains: pasta, rice, cereal

    – Canned vegetables and beans

    – Baby products: diapers, wipes, formula, infant foods

    – Hygiene items: toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, etc.

    – Paper products and household items: toilet tissue, paper towels, dish and laundry soaps, etc.

    HopeWalks Fundraiser Registration Open

    The Newton-Wellesley Hospital Charitable Foundation has announced that its fifth annual HopeWalks event will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014. HopeWalks is a 3.5 mile neighborhood walk to benefit cancer patients and their families by supporting the Integrative Support Services offered at the Vernon Cancer Center. These life-enhancing services for cancer patients optimize healing and comfort throughout treatment. Newton-Wellesley Hospital wants to continue making these services available to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Online registration is now open here.

    HopeWalks Fundraiser Registration Open

    The HopeWalks route will begin and end at the hospital, and all ages are welcome. Check-in will begin at 9:00 AM, with opening ceremonies starting at 9:30 AM. The walk will then set-off at 10:00 AM. There will be a hospitality tent, entertainment, food, and prizes. HopeWalks is a fundraiser, and while there is no minimum donation amount required to participate, it is recommended that each walker raise a minimum of $100.

    The online registration fee is $25 per walker. For those who register by paper or on the day of the event, the registration fee is $35. Children 10 and under are free. Online registration is now available here.
    About the Vernon Cancer Center and the Integrative Support Services

    The Joan and James Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital offers patients an entire realm of cancer care, expert and innovative services and advanced treatment options. Our mission is to deliver comprehensive, compassionate care while providing a sense of hope and comfort to patients and their families. Our team provides personalized care in a private and comfortable setting for cancers such as breast, prostate, lung, colorectal and gynecological malignancies. In addition, benign and malignant blood disorders such as anemia, coagulation disorders, lymphoma, myeloma and leukemia are also treated.

    Specialists at the Center work in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology, New England Hematology/Oncology Associates (NEHOA), and numerous departments at the Hospital to provide for the specific needs of individual patients.

    The Vernon Cancer Center’s Integrative Support Services include:
    • A patient navigator who provides support from the point of diagnosis through the entire continuum of care;
    • Genetic testing and comprehensive risk assessment to identify family history of cancer;
    • Access to a wide variety of clinical trials including research conducted in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Partners Cancer Care;

    • Therapeutic services such as massage, Reiki, yoga, and other relaxation methods;

    The Etiquette Academy to Host Summer 2014 Youth Etiquette Classes  

    The Etiquette Academy of New England has re-partnered with CHUNGDAHM ReadWrite to offer their notable youth etiquette classes: Mind Your Manners (Grades 2-4), Etiquette for Middle Schoolers (Grades 5-8), and Etiquette for Young Adults (Grades 9-12), which will take place from July 7th to 12th at CHUNGDAHM ReadWrite, 1254 Chestnut Street, Newton, MA 02464.

    Summer 2014 Youth Etiquette Classes

    The six-day long etiquette classes cover topics such as improving social and communication skills, projecting confidence, combating shyness, strengthening self-esteem and leadership skills, navigating friendships, resolving conflict, understanding social cues, basic manners, table manners, and more. Programs are specifically developed for each age group and are taught in a fun and interactive way.

    Etiquette for Middle Schoolers will take place from 9am to 11am, followed by Mind Your Manners from Noon to 1:30pm, and Etiquette for Young Adults from 3pm to 5pm.

    The cost ranges from $365 to $469, and the final class will take place at a local upscale restaurant where students get to show off their newly perfected skills!

    Volunteers Needed:

    We need a group of volunteers to help us move out of our office in preparation for a much needed renovation that has been donated to us by the The Wiese Companies of Sherborn.

    PARTY COORDINATOR positions available:

    We are recruiting volunteers for several new shelters in Dorchester, East Boston, Dedham, and Framingham. Party Coordinators (PC) make a one year commitment to throw one party per month at a shelter.

    Time commitment is about 4-5 hours/month. You will get training and ongoing support from Birthday Wishes and you will bring birthday joy to lots of kids living in homeless shelters. This is a great opportunity for families, corporate groups, church//temple groups or individuals who have time to give back.
