Calling All Artists for Road Mural! Kids in Grades 3-8th Eligible!
Here’s a chance to really make your mark on Newton!
Join Newton Highlands merchants and artists in creating the city’s first-ever Road Mural on Lincoln Street.
As part of Newton’s first Annual Walk-Ride Week, the event takes place on Sunday, September 30th from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
We hope to strengthen the community by making the street more joyful and safer for walkers!
Lincoln Street will be closed to traffic for the entire day.
We need adult artists to help create eco-themed murals that highlight all that is “green” in Newton,
We also need children in grades 3 – 8 to help fill in the artwork!
Many hands are welcome, and the results will be semi-durable, hopefully lasting for many months.
This is a free event! Want to join in the fun?
If you are an adult artist and would like to participate, please call Annabelle @ (617) 332-7841 to sign up for a space. -

Newton BoxART: Chestnut Street
New BoxART Projects in Newton
We were gone for two weeks during the end of August and when we returned, it seemed like there were at least a half dozen new BoxART projects in the works. It’s like coming home to find that your spring bulbs have all burst into full bloom!
This pretty BoxART is on Chestnut Street off Woodland Street with a four season theme! Right now, this BoxART piece is reminding me to go apple picking because winter is coming soon!

BoxART West Newton
This is another Newton BoxArtwork in West Newton near Sweet Tomatoes whose best side is not facing the street. I don’t know about you, but I am mixed on the woman’s face. It might be the greenish hue, but sometimes it doesn’t bother me, and sometimes it does. It freaks out my kids though.
What do you think? What side do you like the best?

Newton Centre BoxART
Urban Art (ok, Suburban Art) Celebrates Carriage Lane
The Newton Centre boxART on Commonwealth and Centre street celebrates the carriage lane. A carry over from days of horse and buggy plus Model T Fords, Newton’s carriage lane has evolved into a safe walking and biking lane that runs parallel to the main street, separated by a lovely wide grassy lane.

How Does BoxART in Allston Compare to Newton?
Urban Art: BoxART in Allston Versus Newton
I saw this vibrant BoxART in Allston near the Allston Farmer’s Market. You can tell that this is urban street art: one side of the BoxART is defaced with graffiti which is a shame! Do you see it on the lower left hand photograph near the dove? How do you think this compares to Newton BoxArt?
Newton BoxART: Newton Centre, Auburndale and Newtonville, Newton Highlands, and Newton Centre/Carriage Lane.

Newton BoxART Newton Highlands
Are you enjoying the beautification of the electric boxes around Newton? Artists have transformed the dreary army green or dull black boxes into works of art. Here’s the BoxART in Newton Highlands. I’m going to try to photograph all the BoxART, and then we can all vote for our favorite one. Who’s in?

Newton Artists: Join the BoxART Movement!
Have you noticed the gorgeous artwork that has been beautifying the city on those drab electrical boxes? On all 4 sides too! Newton BoxArt projects are everywhere. We saw our guy working on his below on Commonwealth Avenue at Washington Blvd. It’s timely! And coincides well because this is the turn to the bottom of Boston Marathon’s infamous Heartbreak Hill! I like how there are 4 sides that connect into a 3 dimensional piece of art. There are more boxes that can be painted! If you would like to submit your design to paint one, submit your application soon. The deadlines are June 15 and August 1.The application is on line at www.newtoncommunitypride.org or on the City of Newton website/Government/Cultural Affairs/Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs/Public Art RFP: NewtonSERVES Box Art Project. Call (617) 527-8283 for more information.p.s. This is at Commonwealth Avenue at Walnut Street. It’s so perfect because it’s near Newton Free Library and Newton City Hall! I don’t think that this placement is a coincidence!p.s. Send me photos of your favorite BoxART Projects and we will post them here!
