    Yogurtland Celebrates Grand Opening: Free Yogurt and Family Entertainment

    Yogurtland Newton Center will celebrate the grand opening of the popular frozen yogurt shop with free yogurt and family entertainment. Yogurtland Newton Center, which opened in August, is located at 1231 Centre Street and is open Sunday thru Thursday from 11:30 am – 10 pm, and on Friday and Saturday until 11pm.

        Free yogurt and toppings from 11 AM – 3 PM;
        Balloon artist and face painter from 11 AM – 1 PM;

    This location is owned and operated by business partners Anthony Parrinello and Noah Siegel, who will be developing a half dozen more locations.

    Nonantum Boxing Club held an exhibition sparring event a few weeks ago to raise money to send three boxers to a competition in California held this week. Children, men and women sparred and here are a few highlights. More sparring matches can be viewed here on YouTube.

    We Art Boston Auction and Event to Benefit Boston Marathon Victims

    We Art Boston is a new non profit in response to the Boston Marathon bombing started by Joe and Susan (Hass) McKendry.

    Their kids, Elsie and Owen, are close in age to Martin Richard, the 8 year-old who died that day.  When they lived in the South End, they spent countless hours at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.  As so many parents felt in those hours and days afterwards, they were certain that it very easily could’ve been them.

    They were anxious to find a way to help.  As an artist, Joe had initially planned on auctioning off a few of his paintings and sending the proceeds to aid the victims.  But he quickly decided to try contacting some of his author/illustrator friends to gauge their interest in contributing to a larger auction of children’s book artwork, and the response was overwhelming positive.

    They have collected over 60 pieces of art, generously donated by some of the most beloved children’s book authors/illustrators including Ian Falconer (Olivia), Mo Willems (Knuffle Bunny), David Macaulay (The Way Things Work), and many more.

    Of course, the trauma of the bombing impacted the lives of so many children in ways that went beyond physical injuries, and they recognized the need to acknowledge this, too.  It was important for them to find a way to contribute to the healing of the entire community.

    From October 10 – 24, we’ll be holding an online auction of the work to benefit the Emergency & Trauma Center at Boston Children’s Hospital.

    The work will also be on display on the Rose Kennedy Greenway directly across from the Aquarium on October 20th from 11 am to 3 pm (rain date 10/27).

    Join them for a day of family fun, with live music, author readings, book signings, and art activities led by the authors and illustrators of We Art Boston planned. Bring your favorite stuffed animal to have his/her portrait drawn by a professional artist.

    Family Bike Event: Tour de Newton!

    Sign up for the “Tour de Newton” – The first annual Tour de Newton is scheduled for October 6 and it promises to be a great event for everyone – kids, adults, experienced bicyclists and casual riders.

    The Tour will be a 20 mile bicycle ride that will start simultaneously in all 13 villages at 9:30am.

    Bike the whole loop with a group of your neighbors and be guided by a leader and a sweeper who know the route. The route’s been carefully chosen to be a fun, safe and pleasant ride.

    As the group arrives at each village, you’ll be met by greeters who’ll give you a specially designed village badge and tell you a bit about the highlights of their village. Complete the whole route and you’ll be entered in a drawing to win a new bike from International Bicycle on Needham St.

    Newton Recycling Depot: Drop Off Oct 5th

    Newton residents may drop off books, household items, bicycles and reuseable building materials, such as plumbing and lighting fixtures, and non-upholstered furniture (no mattresses or couches) between 8am and 1pm on Saturday, October 5 at the Rumford avenue depot (off Lexington street in auburndale).

    Paint Exchange Program runs from mid-May through mid-October, and is open Monday through Friday (7:30am-2:30pm). They accept clean, useable latex paint, oil paint and paint products ONLY. Cans must be less than 3 years old and more than half full.  Old paint can be dried up and disposed of safely with your trash.

    Special Drop-Offs for Electronics – Held once per month at the Depot from 8am-12pm. Next opportunity is Oct 18th and 19th. Click here for the schedule and a list of what’s accepted.

    Materials for recycling will also be accepted. Newton Recycling Depot is located at 115 Rumford Ave .
