Hire NNHS science team member and help a future scientist

Do you have an odd job? Hire a science team member and help a future scientist

Members of the The Newton North science team (Naturally Selected and Intelligently Designed) are raising money by doing household jobs such as leaf raking and wallpaper removal.

is looking to do small jobs to raise money for the team. We have the manpower for a range of household tasks: leaf raking, snow shoveling, wall painting, wallpaper removal, and in the past we have even catered for a bar mitzvah. Our hours are fairly flexible (just not school hours), and our prices are negotiable.

The money raised supports the team by offsetting expenses including registration fees, textbooks and materials for “build-ahead” events.  For example, we must pay for all tools and materials that are used for the Science Olympiad competition, including (but not limited to): carbon fiber, wood, metal, saws, drills, screws, etc.

The final cost for one academic year for Olympiad alone is usually between $2000 and $3000.

We will bring research evidence and practical advice to bear on understanding questions like: What realistic risks may teens face with their media use? How can teens benefit most from digital media? How can parents create and enforce appropriate boundaries for their teens’ media use to best balance risks and opportunities?

We will conclude with a half hour for parents to mix and mingle and compare strategies and experiences. Parents from all of the Newton middle schools are welcome.

  • Be on the Look Out for White Male in his 30s or 40s GREEN VAN

Be on the Look Out for White Male in his 30s or 40s GREEN VAN

Newton Police are investigating what they called a “possible kidnapping,” on Wolcott Street on Saturday in Auburndale.

An 11-year-old girl was walking on Wolcott when a green minivan stopped on the side of the road. The driver exited the car and lifted its tailgate. The male driver grabbed a shiny object from the car and said something to the girl that “alarmed” her. The girl ran home.

The girl described the man as around six feet tall, medium build, salt and pepper hair, a few days of being unshaved, and wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

    Article here on Newton Patch.

I am wondering if this is the same person who grabbed the wrist of a woman as she was closing her trunk on Homer Street. The article that I read said a woman was leaving Newton City Hall and, as she drove away, noticed her truck wasn’t closed. She pulled over on Fuller Street to close it and a white Causasian male in his 30s or 40s grabbed her wrist and tried to pull her to the sidewalk. She broke free. He grabbed her wrist again. She screamed at him to leave her alone and was able to drive off.

The suspect is described as a white man, 5-foot-10, in his early 30s, clean shaven, short dark hair, and wore blue jeans and a blue fleece top.

    New! Cupcake City in Newtonville

Do you like cupcakes? There’s a new cupcake store in Newtonville! PickyKidPix and I dashed in between errands to check it out.

    Cupcake City Newtonville, Newton MA

The first thing we noticed was the enticing aroma of vanilla and other delicious aromas as we entered the store. The cupcakes are in attractive display cases and it’s hard to decide!

These were the flavors of the day:

Eventually, we decided on Red Velvet, Hostess, Lemon and Mint Chocolate.

    Cupcake City Newtonville, Newton MA

It was hard to resist sampling in the car, at least for my daughter. She tried them all. Her favorite was the Hostess which tastes like a Ding Dong only so much better. It’s very chocolate-y with a moist, rich crumb. There’s a cream filling inside too. I got a bite but I would have liked an entire Hostess cupcake for myself!

    Cupcake City Newtonville, Newton MA

The Lemon Cupcake has a lemony custard inside. It was delicious with a tangy lemon flavor.

I think the Mint Chocolate cupcakes are sculptural and beautiful. They were delicious too!

The Red Velvet cupcake was the outlier. PickyKidPix said it was a little dry. It’s possible that it was an off day for the Red Velvet and, because it’s my daughter’s favorite, she can be a tough judge.

Still, three of the four cupcakes were delectable. We’ll be back!

Seussical Jr. Family Theater Show in Needham!

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge–not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.

Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community emerge triumphant!
