    Newton Arts Stroll & Shop

On Sunday, December 2 from noon-6pm, Newton Centre is being transformed into a vintage Main Street for the Newton Cultural Alliance’s Arts Stroll & Shop. Featuring participation from 40 local businesses and 100 artists and musicians, the Stroll makes it fashionable for you to shop, eat, and art local.

    Newton Arts Stroll and Shop

The Newton Cultural Alliance (NCA), a coalition of 24 Newton non-profit arts and cultural members, is presenting the Stroll for the second year to make it easy for Newton residents and visitors to Shop Local – Eat Local – Art Local. The Stroll also brings culture and business together for the benefit of our community. Newton Centre shop and restaurant owners are enthusiastic for the opportunity to collaborate.

What can you expect at the Stroll? Empty storefronts on Centre St, Beacon St, and Union St are being turned into pop-up art galleries and performance spaces. Your favorite chic boutiques will be decked out and offering Stroll day discounts. Chefs are creating specialty menus for the event. NCA members the New Philharmonia Orchestra, Newton Open Studios, Newton Art Association, New Art Center, Cappella Clausura, Suzuki School of Newton, and more are providing the cultural entertainment. There’s fun and community spirit to be had for families, couples, friends, and everyone in between!

There is even a free community concert! At 4pm the NCA will present the collaborative performance at the First Baptist Church (848 Beacon St, Newton Centre). Join your friends and neighbors for the music and even join in a sing-a-long! Following the concert, a Stroll & Sing will follow luminaries that have been lit throughout the Centre. This is a guaranteed magical way to close a day full of community spirit, holiday joy, and supporting local businesses and organizations.

Stroll maps with participants and schedules are available in participating stores, on the Newton Cultural Alliance’s website, www.newtonculture.org, and the Arts Stroll & Shop Facebook page. For more information, visit www.newtonculture.org.

Older Drivers and Safety Issues: Free Seminar on How to Talk to Them

For many older adults, driving is a symbol of freedom and independence and represents the ability to maintain connections and actively participate in the community.

However, driving abilities can change over time due to declining vision, decreased strength, stiff joints, slowed reaction times, medical conditions or medication usage. Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among 65 to 74 year olds and are the second leading cause, after falls, among 75 to 84-year- olds.

On Wednesday, December 5, Newton-Wellesley Hospital will offer a free seminar called

Tips for Talking with Older Drivers

The event will be held from 6:30 – 8:00 pm

in the Bowles Conference Center Second Floor

    Newton-Wellesley Hospital, 2014 Washington Street.

Talking with an older driver about stopping or altering driving can be a difficult and challenging conversation. This seminar offers easy-to-use, practical information to help families advise their loved ones on whether it is time to limit or give up driving. The seminar will cover topics like warning signs, conversation openers, how to construct a caring, effective conversation about driving, selecting the right messenger, and finding other forms of transportation so your loved ones can continue to be active and remain part of the community.

Debbie Kerrigan, MS, OTR/L, a senior occupational therapist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, will facilitate the program. She has been involved in driving rehabilitation and older driver safety for the last five years.

Last spring, Debbie was a recipient of a mini-grant from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA). Under that grant, she developed two different educational presentations targeted toward older drivers, as well as physicians.

Light refreshments will be served. To reserve your seat for this free event email carefinder@partners.org or call 617.243.5900. For more information, please visit www.nwh.org/community.

  • Advice from Day Middle School Nurse: Walk or Bike to School!

Advice from Day Middle School Nurse: Walk or Bike to School!

walk to school day, Day Middle School, The case for a car-free commute to school

Students across the country celebrated International Walk to School and Bike to school day earlier this month, including students (in Newton or here at F.A. Day Middle School). Thousands of students reaped the numerous health and environmental benefits that walking, biking or riding the bus to school provides.  Walking or biking to school shouldn’t just be a once a year activity though. We’re lucky in Newton that most students live close enough to walk, bike or ride a bus to school every day. Read on to learn why a car-free commute to school is a healthy way to start your day, and tips for getting going!

    • Regular physical activity, including walking to school, provides the following benefits according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
      • Builds and maintains healthy bones, muscles, and joints.
      • Helps control weight, build lean muscle and reduce fat.
      • Improves sense of self-image and autonomy.
      • Fosters healthy social and emotional development.
    • More students walking, biking or taking the bus helps reduce car congestion around the school, and reduce the environmental impact cars make.
    • Even students who take the bus benefit from walking to and from the bus stop, and the sense of independence created by getting to school on their own.
    • Students who walk and bike to school learn the rules of the road, which can help make them better pedestrians and drivers as they get older and get to school on their own.
    • Even for parents who are planning to drive to work, walking to school can be quicker than dealing with car congestion around the school building. Or if you must drive, consider dropping students off a few blocks before the school and allowing them to walk the rest of the way.
    • It’s possible to walk year round, even in New England. Break out those snow boots, hats, gloves, galoshes and rain/winter coats when the weather forecast calls for them.
    • If you’re not sure where to begin, consider making a dry run on a weekend when there isn’t pressure to be on time. Practice the route with your child so s/he knows where to go.
    • Safety first! Always wear a helmet when bicycling, riding a scooter, or anything else with wheels.

    An important note about idling:

The Massachusetts school idling regulation prohibits motor vehicle idling within 100 feet of school grounds. The fine is $100 for a first offense, and $500 for each subsequent offense.According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Idling vehicles contribute to air pollution and emit air toxins, which are pollutants known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects. Monitoring at schools has shown elevated levels of benzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other air toxics during the afternoon hour coinciding with parents picking up their children. Children’s lungs are still developing, and when they are exposed to elevated levels of these pollutants, children have an increased risk of developing asthma, respiratory problems and other adverse health effects. Limiting a vehicle’s idling time can dramatically reduce these pollutants and children’s exposure to them.”

“Turn your key, be idle free!”

Newton Free Library Event with William Landay of Defending Jacob

William Landay of Defending Jacob is speaking at the Newton Free Library on Monday, November 26th at 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Our book club has decided to attend this event instead of hosting our usual book club. Everyone who has read the book has raved about it. That it includes Newton landmarks is an added bonus! See you at this great free event!

Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county (NEWTON!)  for more than twenty years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: His fourteen-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.

Every parental instinct Andy has rallies to protect his boy. Jacob insists that he is innocent, and Andy believes him. Andy must. He’s his father. But as damning facts and shocking revelations surface, as a marriage threatens to crumble and the trial intensifies, as the crisis reveals how little a father knows about his son, Andy will face a trial of his own—between loyalty and justice, between truth and allegation, between a past he’s tried to bury and a future he cannot conceive.

Award-winning author William Landay has written the consummate novel of an embattled family in crisis—a suspenseful, character-driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can spin out of control.
