6 Food Myths That Are Making Kids Fat

According to the Center for Disease Control, obesity rates in children are twice what they were 30 years ago. Many parents are unsure why their child is seemingly unable to stop gaining weight. Dr. Dyan Hes, Medical Director of Gramercy Pediatrics, explains some of the common food myths that are making kids fat.

Dr. Dyan Hes, Medical Director of Gramercy Pediatrics

“There is a lot of confusion surrounding healthy food choices,” says Dr. Hes. “A stroll down almost any supermarket isle in the country, and customers will find products that advertise healthy ingredients, when in reality they can lead to weight gain in children. It can be confusing for parents to decipher what the healthiest food options truly are.”

Dr. Hes advises parents to look out for these hazardous eating myths when trying to make healthier choices for their children:

Myth 1: Foods Labeled ‘Diet,’ ‘Gluten Free,’ and ‘Organic’ are Healthy Choices

Food trends and product labels can mislead people into believing they are eating a healthy diet. “When deciding what to feed growing children, it’s important to look at foods as a whole,” says Dr. Hes. “Look at things like sodium, artificial sweetener, nutritional value, and calories. All of these play a role in determining if a food item is healthy or not.”

Dr. Hes goes on to explain that sodium can lead to high blood pressure, even in children. Lowering sodium is especially important for children who are overweight in order to lower their risk for heart disease in the future. Parents should also look out for artificial sweeteners, which can make children want to eat more food, consequently consuming more calories than they otherwise would. Additionally, growing children need certain nutrients from their food. A slightly higher calorie meal might be a healthier option if it’s providing significant amounts of vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, and/or calcium.

Myth 2: Juice is A Healthy Drink for Kids

Many parents believe that since fruit is healthy, fruit juice is great for their children. However, this high-calorie sugary beverage could be contributing to weight gain. Some argue that the drinks have great nutritional value because they can be rich in vitamins, but Dr. Hes says that parents are better off giving their child fresh fruit to eat, which also contains fiber that is lost in the juicing process. The excess calories from juice also fill a child up so that they do not want to eat the solid foods that have fiber, protein, and healthy fats.

Myth 3: Cereal is a Great Way for Children to Start the Day

Cereal is an easy and tasty breakfast option for kids rushing to make the school bus. Beware, most child marketed cereal options contain more sugar than the standard dessert. Cereal can be tricky, misleading labels often advertise healthy ingredients, vitamins, and whole grains. These boasted benefits can be outweighed by the sugar quantity. The excessive glucose can lead to a rapid increase in blood sugar as well as an increase in calorie consumption. Dr. Hes recommends reading food labels carefully to replace sugary cereals with healthier options. She points out that parents need to keep a sharp eye out for sneaky sugar terms may appear on boxes such as organic molasses, bee honey, and organic sugar cane, which fool parents into believing that they are health cereals In addition, breakfast options like fruit, low-fat yogurt, eggs, and oatmeal give kids the energy they need without packing on the pounds.

Myth 4: Whole Wheat Bread is Healthy Bread

“There are fewer differences between white bread and whole wheat bread than most people believe,” Dr. Hes says. “They both have high levels of glucose that are broken down into the bloodstream the same way.  This not only causes weight gain but can lead to a more serious health problem such as diabetes.”

If a package is labeled as whole wheat, it does not mean it contains the healthy grains children need. Processed whole wheat bread is almost entirely stripped of fiber. Be careful when reading bread labels and look for packages that read 100% whole grains. These healthier alternatives have been shown to allow for more balanced glucose level in children.

Myth 5: Frozen Yogurt is a Healthy Dessert Option

Frozen yogurt can be a healthier alternative to most ice creams, but that does not mean that it is the best option. Although most frozen yogurt is low-fat, it still contains more calories than most people imagine. A large cup of standard frozen yogurt is around 380 calories with 76g grams of sugar, not including toppings. Most kids prefer their flavored frozen yogurt with sugary toppings which can be just as fattening as ice cream. Adding sprinkles, candy, and artificial syrups leads to potentially harmful levels of sugar. Dr. Hes recommends serving plain low-fat frozen yogurt with fruit. The fruit will sweeten up the yogurt without adding unnecessary and harmful sugars. Also, make sure to keep the portion sizes small to lessen the buildup of calories.

Myth 6: Veggie Chips are a Healthy Alternative to Potato Chips

This sneaky snack often contains the same number of calories as potato chips, and can have the same weight gaining effects too. The small serving of vegetables found in veggie chips are countered by the high amounts of potato and corn flour. The vital nutrients that vegetables contain are lost in the process when veggie chips are manufactured. Dr. Hes recommends cutting out the processed potato altogether and making healthy vegetable snacks at home. Kale baked with a small amount of olive oil and salt is crispy like a potato chip, without having the same unhealthy ingredients that can compromise children’s health and weight.

    NNHS Nothing Unusual Found

I am writing to follow up on our earlier communication regarding an incident at Newton North High School this morning.  As I reported earlier, at approximately 10:40 AM a threatening phone call was received in the main office.

The building was then placed in “Shelter in Place.” While in Shelter in Place, the exterior doors to the building are locked and students remain in their classrooms with their teachers. We are continuing to coordinate our response with the Newton Fire and Police department, as well as the State Police department.

The Fire Department has already searched the building using thermal imaging technology, and the State Police is currently completing a second search of the building using bomb-sniffing dogs.  While these precautions are underway, our students and staff remain in Shelter-in-Place.  There is no immediate danger to our students, and we are taking every precaution to ensure that there is no risk before returning to our school routines. We will update the Newton North community as soon as we have additional information.

    —————

I am pleased to report that the State Police has concluded their search of the entire building and found nothing out of the ordinary.  As a result, the Shelter-in-Place has concluded and we have returned to our normal school routines.  This afternoon’s schedule will be adjusted and students will be in lunches and class until our regular Tuesday dismissal time (2:35.) I would like to thank the Newton Police and Fire departments and the State Police for their support. I am also thankful to the staff and students for their patience and understanding.   I am sorry to report that schools across Eastern Massachusetts received similar threats today.  As always, we take safety and security seriously, and work closely with public safety officials and continue to be vigilant. Thank you very much for your understanding and support,

    Sincerely,

    Mark Aronson

    Interim Principal

    —————-

    Good Afternoon,

I am writing to you regarding today’s events. Again, I would like to acknowledge all of the fine work done today by the Newton Police Department, Newton Fire Department, The Mass State Police and our Newton North Staff. As you know we received a threat to our building that required us to “Shelter in Place” while the authorities did their jobs to ensure the safety of the building. I realize that these events create a multitude of feelings for all of us and raise questions as to the best response. Rest assured that we work closely with all of the above agencies and the superintendent’s office to make a well informed decision based on the facts at hand. Please know that we are consistently reflecting on our safety practices and appreciate your continued support as we work to maintain a safe, supportive learning environment for our students. Tomorrow we look forward to having a typical school routine. Counselors are always available to any student who may need some support regarding today’s events. If you are concerned about your child please feel free to contact their housemaster or counselor.

    Have a nice evening, Mark

    —————

Other schools receiving threats include Arlington High School, Groton Middle School, and the Florence Roche School. Fitzgerald Elementary School in Waltham was also evacuated Tuesday morning after a male called in a threat, police confirmed. A threat was phoned-in to Swampscott High School around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of students and dismissal from classes for the rest of the day, authorities confirm. The incident is still under investigation.

Police in Tewksbury say they’re investigating at Tewksbury High School. Newton police said firefighters are currently at Newton North High School investigating, but they do not believe the school was evacuated.

The Superintendents office of Ayer-Shirley Regional say the high school received a threat and that students were moved to a local elementary school. From NECN.com

Do you think this has anything to do with end of term tests?

DISCOVERY EDUCATION AND 3M SEARCH FOR AMERICA’S 2016 TOP YOUNG SCIENTIST

    — Next Generation of STEM Leaders Invited to Solve the Challenges of Tomorrow and Compete for $25,000 in the Annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge —

    — Through One-of-a-Kind Summer Mentorship, 3M Scientists Will Provide Guidance and Support to Student Finalists as They Develop an Innovative Solution that Improves Lives —

Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge

Discovery Education and 3M are proud to announce the opening of the annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for students in grades 5-8.  Through the program, young inventors have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work closely with a 3M Scientist Mentor, compete for $25,000, and earn the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

The Challenge rewards students who use their science acumen and innovative thinking to create new ways to solve the issues we face every day. Hannah Herbst, who won last year for her energy probe prototype that seeks to offer a stable power source to developing countries, entered the contest because she wanted to help her 9-year-old pen pal living in Ethiopia who lacks a reliable source of power and electricity.

Any student in grades 5-8 can enter the contest by creating a one to two-minute video communicating the science behind a new innovation or solution that could solve or impact an everyday problem.

Video entries will be evaluated based on their creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation. Ten finalists will then be chosen to participate in an exclusive mentorship program where they will work closely with a 3M scientist. During the program, finalists will be challenged to develop an innovation that positively impacts them, their family, their community or the global population. The students will meet virtually with their mentors and will receive additional resources and support from 3M and Discovery Education. Each finalist will also receive a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn., to compete at the final event in October 2016.

All video entries must be submitted online at www.youngscientistchallenge.com no later than April 20, 2016. Videos will not be judged on production skills and may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital cameras.

“Turning ideas into reality is what 3M scientists do every day,” said Jon Lindekugel, senior vice president of business development and marketing-sales at 3M.  “The Young Scientist Challenge is designed to inspire the next generation of science leaders by enabling them to see the practical applications of science and how their inventions can be used to improve lives.”

Since its inception, the Young Scientist Challenge has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student scholarships and prizes, paired students with world-renowned scientists to give them real-world insights and delivered much-needed science resources to millions of students, teachers and families across the country. Previous winners have met the President of the United States, addressed members of Congress, worked with the nation’s top scientists and been featured in Forbes magazine’s annual “30 Under 30” list.

“The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge allows our nation’s next generation of innovators to interact and be mentored by world-renowned scientists, and inspires interest in the wonders of science,” said Nancy Addison, Director of PreK-12 STEM Education, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. “This unique partnership between Discovery Education and 3M encourages scientific exploration among America’s youth and helps cultivate important skills to help students succeed in college, career and life.”

  • 2 Worst Zoos for Elephants Here in Boston

2 Worst Zoos for Elephants Here in Boston

International animal protection organization, In Defense of Animals, today released its annual list of the 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants in North America, with two Massachusetts zoos featuring on the dishonorable list. Buttonwood scooped #5 worst, and Southwick’s Zoo is shamed in #10th place.

2 Worst Zoos in North America Here in Boston
Buttonwood Zoo is not new to this list and sadly, the USDA has not intervened, despite the fact that this intolerable and unsafe situation clearly violates the federal Animal Welfare Act by knowingly forcing two clearly incompatible Asian elephants to live in the same enclosure together.

Southwick’s Zoo doesn’t keep elephants year-round, but rents them for elephant rides from Have Trunk Will Travel, a company with a history of being notoriously brutal and violent to its elephants.

Now in its twelfth year, In Defense of Animals’ respected list exposes the cruelty behind keeping the Earth’s largest land mammal captive in small, inadequate zoo exhibits that cause a lifetime of misery and lead to premature death.

    2 worst zoos in America
“It is shocking that Massachusetts has not one, but two of the worst zoos for elephants in North America” said In Defense of Animals President, Dr. Marilyn Kroplick. “If you want to help protect elephants, don’t visit the zoo and instead help support real conservation efforts that keep animals in the wild where they belong.”

Toni Frohoff, Ph.D., Elephant Scientist for In Defense of Animals said, “Evidence shows that elephants are not thriving or self-sustaining in zoos. Urgent action must be taken to stop greedy corporations from plundering elephants from the wild so they can restock elephants dying out in zoo displays faster than they can reproduce.”

    BUTTONWOOD ZOO

Asian elephant Ruth remains the prisoner of another prisoner at Buttonwood Zoo, with no escape.  Cage-mate Emily continues to display aggression towards her, which the zoo now calls “assertion” or “agitation.” So, was Emily was simply showing “assertion” when she bit off six inches of Ruth’s tail in 2006? Ruth’s poor tail was further amputated due to frostbite and a bone infection in 2014. During her recuperation, Ruth was placed in with Emily because the zoo lacked proper holding facilities for separation, and Emily continued to go after Ruth’s wounded tail and to intimidate her in other ways.

The zoo no longer reports the injuries that Ruth endures, and her injuries are even called “self-inflicted.” Instead of doing the right thing and removing Ruth from an abusive and dangerous situation, the zoo continues to keep Ruth as a “companion” to Emily. Sadly, the USDA has not intervened, despite the fact that this intolerable and unsafe situation violates the federal Animal Welfare Act by knowingly forcing two clearly incompatible Asian elephants to live in the same enclosure together. These two are not warming up to each other in their cold, cramped winter wasteland of an exhibit.

“Buttonwood Zoo is forcing elephants to suffer by keeping two highly incompatible individuals in a winter wasteland” said In Defense of Animals President, Dr. Marilyn Kroplick. “It’s time for New Bedford to show that it is a “compassionate city“, as it claims to be, by granting Ruth and Emily an early release from their desperate lives and sending them to a sanctuary where they can be with her own kind in a much more suitable environment.”

    SOUTHWICK’S ZOO

Each summer, Southwick’s Zoo hires a California-based company to truck in elephants over a treacherously long distance in order to sell elephant rides to their customers. The zoo has been using Have Trunk Will Travel (HTWT), an elephant “rental” company. HTWT has a history of being notoriously brutal and violent to its elephants who are also rented out to be used in other forms of entertainment including appearances in movies, events, and theme parks.

HTWT was caught on video viciously beating elephants, using an electric shock device, and striking a baby elephant over the head and pulling her trunk. These elephants were also observed chained for 12 hours a day, barely able to move back and forth, let alone walk. Last summer, Southwick’s Zoo rented elephants Rosie and Tai. Rosie is seen in undercover footage apparently being jabbed with a sharp bullhook to make her run faster by HTWT.

Not only does Southwick’s Zoo show a blatant disregard for elephant welfare, it apparently doesn’t care about human health either. An elephant named Dondi was previously used to give rides. After her death in 2010, she was found to have tuberculosis. Dondi was the second elephant at the zoo who carried the disease. An elephant named Judy performed at Southwick’s Zoo, despite having been exposed to tuberculosis-positive elephants. Upon her death in 2007, it was confirmed that she had the disease.

Even multiple County Fairs that exist purely for recreation have chosen to discontinue their elephant rentals from HTWT. It is shocking that this zoo – with a mandate to inform and educate – has not yet ceased giving elephant rides to an unsuspecting public.

“It is utterly vile that Southwick’s Zoo sells tickets for visitors to ride on the aching backs of elephants abused by Have Trunk Will Travel” said In Defense of Animals President, Dr. Marilyn Kroplick. “We call on Southwick’s Zoo to stop supporting violence to elephants and end all elephant appearances at the park.”

    10 WORST ZOOS:
1 Dallas Zoo, Tex., Henry Doorly Zoo, Neb., and Sedgwick County Zoo, Kan.
    2 Natural Bridge Zoo, Vir.
    3 Oklahoma City Zoo, Okla.

    6 San Antonio Zoo, Tex.
    7 Oregon Zoo, Ore.

CAPA Drops Musical After Complaints of Racism

'Thoroughly Modern Millie' play draws controversy in Mass. over racial stereotyping

Thoroughly Modern Millie raised a backlash from students.

The Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts has dropped a planned staging of the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie after students complained about racist portrayals of Asians in the play.

Two students — Jasmine Luca and Tai Joselyn — described the controversy in a Tuesday essay for The Notebook, saying the play should be re-named Thoroughly Racist Millie.

Millie depends on disturbing stereotypes toward Asians,” the duo wrote. “The lead character, Mrs. Meers, appears in yellow face and is directed to speak in a fake Chinese accent. But since Mrs. Meers is not Asian, what do you think happens when someone mimics a Chinese accent to almost a completely non-Chinese audience? Just look at any of the YouTube videos of this character purposefully mangling Chinese.”

    IMDbThoroughly Embalmed Musical

    Project MuseThoroughly Modern Millie (review)

Not Like CrazyAn Easily Overlooked Racism?

In the Spring semester at school, the Musical Theater Department put on Thoroughly Modern Millie, which was overflowing with racism in its portrayal of Asians. I must say, I was thoroughly upset about the whole thing. First, the guys playing the Asians, I believe they were supposed to be Chinese immigrants, had white face makeup and slanty eyes. I couldn’t help but think that if they’d dressed in blackface, surely there’d be an uproar (Of course, they are putting on Ragtime this year, so we’ll see how they handle that– they’re already sending out emails about how they want the black students to try out for roles because there aren’t many black people in the musical theater department *eyeroll*). That wasn’t the only bad thing about the musical, however, the villian was a white woman pretending to be Asian who pronounced her L’s as R’s, and said she used soy sauce to clean a stain. Of course, she also treated the two Asian immigrants who worked for her as if they were stupid, and the silently and humbly submit in front of her, though behind closed doors they argue in Chinese (I guess it was real Chinese), with subtitles projected above the stage. And then one of the Asian men falls in love with one of the white women in the musical, blonde hair, blue eyes, you know the deal. At the end of the musical, they get together, as if his reward for working hard and being submissive, for being mistreated, is the gift of white womanhood, the pinnacle of creation. So yeah, I was pretty pissed about that whole thing.

    MyvanwyReview of Thoroughly Modern Millie

Someone sent me video of a local comedian’s youtube video of a character I’ve seen him portray once before. To call it infantile and racially insensitive would be a gross understatement. For the targets of his ridicule, it’s every bit as offensive as a mean-spirited performance in blackface. But because it’s against one of the few groups for whom bigotry, hostility, and ridicule is still acceptable (Chinese Americans and others of Asian and/or Pacific Island descent), it’s seen as okay by most and even encouraged by other local comedians. Kevin Marshall’s America

    Zak KeithHollywood Asian Stereotypes

Racism against Asians is often “unawares”—a form of racism that flies under the radar due to its widespread acceptance as the norm. Its interactive dynamic resembles that of an unwritten social contract. Asians in the West are expected to accept patronizing remarks and racist taunts so demeaning that perpetrators would think twice before dishing them out with such unwavering consistency to any other minority group, such as Latinos or African Americans. Asians who object to such treatment are typically met with befuddlement and offense at their audacity to make an issue out of it.
