    Lionel Kicks-Off Event on Saturday, December 5th at Local Hobby Shops Nationwide, Including Store in Boston-Area  

     

    WHO:             Helping to kick off the holiday season and commemorate its 115th anniversary, Lionel, the iconic model train company, is introducing its first-ever National Lionel Train Day.  Lionel is working with local hobby shops nationwide to host in-store events on Saturday, December 5, including Charles Ro Supply Company in Malden.

     

    WHAT:          The public is invited to join Lionel at Charles Ro Supply Company to help celebrate the joy Lionel trains have provided to generations of families over the years. A variety of activities for kids and families will be taking place throughout the day. In addition, a one-day-only collectible boxcar will be available for pre-order in store.

     

    Activities taking place at Charles Ro Supply Company include:

    • Operating Lionel train layouts with six trains running at a time for fans of all ages to enjoy
    • Lionel representatives on-site to interact with train fans
    • Special in-store pricing on select Lionel items
    • In-store raffles every hour and one grand prize winner will receive a full Lionel train set
    • National Lionel Train Day Boxcar available for pre-order only on December 5, to commemorate this event. This item is a truly collectable piece and a great addition to any track layout.
    • Lionel conductor hats, temporary tattoos and other items available for kids
    • National Lionel Train Day banner for consumers to sign

    ‘Big Dream’ – Free STEM Event for Girls

    ‘Big Dream’ – Free STEM Inspiration Event for Girls, Grades 6-12
    Saturday, November 14th at 2:00 pm

    Middle and high school girls are invited to a free STEM event on Saturday, November 14, 2:00 pm –  4:30 pm, in Newton Free Library’s Druker Auditorium. Meet with over a dozen women scientists and engineers in a wide range of fields and careers. View an inspiring documentary, “Big Dream”, which tells the stories of seven young women as they face challenges pursuing STEM careers. Discuss the issues the film raises. Ask questions.     The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will perform a concert which is free and open to the public on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 7:30pm, conducted by Benjamin Zander, thanks to the ‘Free For All Concert Fund’. The November 2 program consists of Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila, Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto with violinist Ayano Ninomiya, Debussy’s La mer, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. Ayano Ninomiya is an award-winning violinist who recently joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music and attended Harvard University and The Juilliard School. The 112 members of the BPYO range in age from 12 to 21, and are chosen through a highly-selective audition process. They reside or attend school throughout New England, and come together on Saturday afternoons for sectionals and full orchestra rehearsals at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, in Boston’s South End. The November concert is the first performance the orchestra will give since its triumphant European summer tour.

    Great minds don’t always think alike!  That’s the message of the children’s book, Fish In A Tree, to be featured at Understanding Our Differences’ 4th Annual Family Book Event with a disability theme.  Author Lynda Mullaly Hunt will talk about and sign her New York Times bestselling novel, about a girl with learning disabilities who discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label.
    Date:  Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015

    Time:  Program is 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Book signing follows.
