If your kids want to train during the winter, it can be challenging to find them indoor soccer options. Here’s what I’ve found in the Newton area.
Soccer on the Mat
Soccer on the Mat is a unique and innovative soccer and yoga program designed to empower young girls (ages 11-15) while improving their soccer fitness and technique and decreasing soccer specific injuries. The curriculum created by Coach Alison Foley focuses on building and celebrating the physical and emotional growth through a variety of drills, poses and conversation. Each class will strengthen both the body and mind of the soccer athlete while also providing opportunities to build confidence and body awareness through teamwork and mindfulness focused activities
Coach Foley supervises and trains each Soccer on the Mat teacher who is uniquely skilled in both yoga and soccer instruction.
Brazilian Fast Footwork is a class developed by Boston College Women’s Soccer Head Coach, Alison Foley. This unique fast footwork class for girls ages 11-15 focuses on increasing physical foot speed by utilizing the ladder and resistance bands to make you quicker and more explosive. It’s a high intensity class that pushes your mastery on the ball.
We have a combination of fast footwork soccer drills that are guaranteed to make you more confident on the ball, improve your first touch and master your dribbling 1 v 1 moves. We combine the use of a size 5 ball and the mini-Brazilian ball for the ultimate technical challenge!

BOXYGEN at Nonantum Boxing Club. Circuit and heavy bag fitness. Kids ages 12 and up can do it without an adult accompanying them. BOXYGEN is designed for all ages and fitness levels by allowing each person to exercise at his or her own pace.
CATS in Needham. They have different options for different ages. Here’s their Middle School program.
Down Under Yoga in Newtonville. They have girls and co-ed teen classes. Teens can also take the adult classes.

WHO: Helping to kick off the holiday season and commemorate its 115th anniversary, Lionel, the iconic model train company, is introducing its first-ever National Lionel Train Day. Lionel is working with local hobby shops nationwide to host in-store events on Saturday, December 5, including Charles Ro Supply Company in Malden.
WHAT: The public is invited to join Lionel at Charles Ro Supply Company to help celebrate the joy Lionel trains have provided to generations of families over the years. A variety of activities for kids and families will be taking place throughout the day. In addition, a one-day-only collectible boxcar will be available for pre-order in store.

Middle and high school girls are invited to a free STEM event on Saturday, November 14, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm, in Newton Free Library’s Druker Auditorium. Meet with over a dozen women scientists and engineers in a wide range of fields and careers. The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will perform a concert which is free and open to the public on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 7:30pm, conducted by Benjamin Zander, thanks to the ‘Free For All Concert Fund’. The November 2program consists of Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila, Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto with violinist Ayano Ninomiya, Debussy’s La mer, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. Ayano Ninomiya is an award-winning violinist who recently joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music and attended Harvard University and The Juilliard School. The 112 members of the BPYO range in age from 12 to 21, and are chosen through a highly-selective audition process. They reside or attend school throughout New England, and come together on Saturday afternoons for sectionals and full orchestra rehearsals at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, in Boston’s South End. The November concert is the first performance the orchestra will give since its triumphant European summer tour.
