The Hampstead Stage presents Pinocchio, recommended for grades K-8. Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio is the timeless tale of an Italian woodcarver, Geppetto, who carves a son out of a block of pine.

Join the wooden marionette on his journey to become a real boy! Through Pinocchio’s mischievous adventures, he discovers that to truly be human is to be good-hearted and brave. This is a story of self-discovery, transformation, and redemption.

With this play, we hope to teach students the importance of honesty, education, and gratitude.

Book launch party for Mitali Perkins at Newtonville Books!

    Book launch party for
    TIGER BOY by Mitali Perkins
    TIGER BOY by Mitali Perkins
    April 26th, 4 p.m.
    Newtonville Books in Newton Centre
The book is for children grades 2-5, and just earned a starred review from School Library Journal:
★ (School Library Journal) Gr 3-6–Set in the lush Sundarbans natural region of Bengal, this quiet, gripping tale emphasizes the deep but often fragile connection that exists between humans and nature … Perkins avoids black-and-white characterizations and compassionately illustrates how dire circumstances affect a person’s choices.
Young readers will revel in the vivid action and suspense surrounding Neel and his sister Rupa’s quest to locate the tiger cub. Adults will likely praise the novel’s simple and clear narrative, which belies its complexity around issues related to climate change, poor economic conditions, class structure, and gender discrimination.

    Mayor’s STEM Night March 30th

Mayor’s STEM Night has been rescheduled for March 30th, 2015.  The event will be held at Newton North High School, in the Cafeteria.   The night will give students a chance to learn about possible career paths, network with a local company and participate in activities. Mayor's STEM Night Newton MA

Mayor Setti D. Warren has started a new event series with local STEM industry businesses featuring an interactive, participatory experience to spark Newton students’ interest in STEM. These nights are a time for our students to get their hands on the latest technology, hear from local innovators and get excited about all that STEM has to offer. Each evening will be a partnership with a local business in the STEM field and will involve a speaking program as well as an interactive workshop for young people.

In partnership with the Newton Public Schools, we are committed to reaching out to our most vulnerable populations including young women, minorities and low-income children and families in an effort to help bridge the achievement gap. By partnering with STEM industry businesses, the “Mayor’s STEM Nights” will provide students with an exciting, hands-on experience that will demonstrate the practical application of STEM beyond the classroom and help to generate interest in the many opportunities STEM offers.  Local innovators will also share their own stories about how they became interested in the STEM disciplines, what led them to their current career paths and answer students’ questions.

  • Newton Family Singers: Beatles

    Newton Family Singers: Beatles

John, Paul, George or Ringo – who is your favorite?  We love them all!  In the 1960’s, the Beatles hit the US at one of the most socially tumultuous times in our history, providing an outlet for young people to express their uncertainty, irreverence, and independence.  From the quiet idealism of Imagine, to the rousing optimism of All You Need is Love, the music of the Beatles holds a special place in our hearts, remaining fresh and meaningful to each generation that discovers it.

So take a trip down memory lane (maybe even a Magical Mystery Tour) with the Newton Family Singers as we celebrate the Beatles as only the Newton Family Singers can do!  Pack up the minivan – you’ll want to share this music with your kids! “NFS Tribute to the Beatles” will play at the Newton South High School Auditorium on March 29th at 4pm.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.newtonfamilysingers.org.
