    Newton Inspires—An Evening of Ideas and Community

    What do NPR host Tom Ashbrook, Boston Globe Film Critic Ty Burr, novelist and author Anita Diamant, and Defending Jacob author William Landay have in common? All four writers and journalists are Newton residents, and all will headline the second annual Newton Inspires—An Evening of Ideas and Community, sponsored by the Newton Schools Foundation (NSF).

    The free community event will take place :

    November 14, 7-9:30 p.m.

    at Newton South High School

    140 Brandeis Road in Newton Centre

    Leaders representing an array of fields and interest areas will address topics ranging from business, education, science and medicine, journalism and the environment, to sports, literature, arts and entertainment. Participants choose three 30-minute speaker sessions from among 18 speakers. At the end of the evening, participants and speakers gather to reconnect over coffee and dessert.

    ABOUT THE SHOW HOUSE

    The Junior League of Boston is hosting an exciting month-long Show House event. This celebrated designshowcase is now in its 35th year and is expected to draw over 10,000 visitors.  The Potter Estate, on the grounds of the Jackson-Walnut Park Schools in Newton, is being transformed by 35 prominent local design firms who have generously donated their time and materials. Each of the 36 design areas of this stately home and grounds is being re-designed, while maintaining the character of this 1867 property.

    Breast Cancer Awareness FREE Community Event

    Grab your mom, sister, daughter or friend and join other women from the western suburbs for Think Pink, on Thursday, October 25 from 6:00-8:00 pm, in the Bowles Conference Center (second floor) at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, 2014 Washington Street, Newton.

    This FREE breast cancer awareness community event will begin with a wine and hors d’oeuvre reception while attendees enjoy music and discover the relaxation benefits of Reiki and massage.

    Nutrition and fitness experts will also be on hand.

    Following the reception, there will be a panel discussion on new mammography advances such as tomosynthesis.

    Tips on understanding mammogram results and navigating next steps will also be discussed.

    Window Painting Contest Rules

    • Each artist will be assigned a 20″ x 36″ space on the outside of a merchant window in Newton’s participating villages.
    • Sill, wall, and sidewalk areas below window MUST be covered and taped with newspaper.
    • Each artist supplies his or her own tempera (NOT ACRYLIC) paints, brushes, newspaper, rags, and masking tape. All work needs to be done freehand and have a “Halloween” theme.
    • Official rules and regulations will be mailed prior to the event and must be followed closely to avoid disqualification.
    • Register on-line.
    • Registration deadline is Friday October 19.
    • Windows will be painted on Saturday, October 27, any time between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. all work must be finished by 4:00 pm.
    • The rain date for painting will be Sunday, October 28, 9am – 4pm. Please check this website or call 617-527-8283 by 8am on Saturday, October 27 for an announcement regarding weather-related conditions.
    • Windows are assigned on a first come first served basis. One window will be assigned to each participant. Due to the popularity of this event, we cannot honor requests for specific windows.
    • First, second and third place prizes will be awarded for each Grade. Special Awards Ceremony with Mayor Setti Warren will be on Tuesday October 30, 2:00 pm at the Newton Cultural Center. (directions)

    Thank you to Elizabeth Reilly as the volunteer coordinator for this wonderful event for kids. She has been coordinating this event for years and threatens to retire this year! Will someone else step up to the plate if she stop coordinating this? Unclear! But this possibly could be the last year, so please participate!!!

    It will be held on Saturday, October 13th from 8am-2pm at the Recycling Depot at Rumford Ave.

    Swapping and Donating: bring along useful but unwanted belongings for swapping or donating. Bring your stuff, or just come along & pick something up – for free!

    • Appliances – Bicycles – Books
    • Household items and non-upholstered furniture (No mattresses or couches)
    • REUSABLE building materials (cabinets, doors, plumbing and light fixtures, lumber, drywall, etc.)
    • NO computer monitors, NO televisions, NO hazardous materials, NO paint
    • Pretty much anything, so long as it is usable, non-toxic, non-hazardous – and clean!

    DROP-OFFS ACCEPTED (NEWTON RESIDENTS ONLY!) FROM 8 – 1 PM

    Recycling and Reuse: bring along any of the following and the City of Newton will make sure that they are recycled, given to charity or disposed of safely.

    • Fluorescent bulbs and other mercury-containing items
    • Cell phones, all printer cartridges
    • Clothing
    • Paper, cardboard, glass, metal, all plastic bottles
    • Dead rechargeable batteries

The shows look great and are well priced thanks to underwriting from Magic Beans and Eastern Bank. When the weather turns nasty, this is a great option to get the kids out of the house while introducing them to the fun of live performances!

    ABOUT COOLIDGE KIDS’ SHOWS

    All shows start at 10:30 am

    Stroller parking is available in the downstairs lobby and the theater is fully accessible.
    Booster seats are also available for the tiny ones.

    Tickets are $10 adults/$8 children for live acts and $7 adults/$5 children to all films.

    All programs are recommended for children ages 3 to 10 unless otherwise indicated.

    Don’t get shut out of the show! Buy your tickets early at the box office or online (www.coolidge.org). All children pay admission unless they are held in their parents lap for the entire show.

    Here’s a chance to really make your mark on Newton! 

    Join Newton Highlands merchants and artists in creating the city’s first-ever Road Mural on Lincoln Street. 

    As part of Newton’s first Annual Walk-Ride Week, the event takes place on Sunday, September 30th from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. 


    We hope to strengthen the community by making the street more joyful and safer for walkers!  

    Lincoln Street will be closed to traffic for the entire day.


    We need adult artists to help create eco-themed murals that highlight all that is “green” in Newton, 

    We also need children in grades 3 – 8  to help fill in the artwork! 
     

    Many hands are welcome, and the results will be semi-durable, hopefully lasting for many months.

    The Associates of the Boston Public Library is pleased to invite you to the fourteenth annual Literary Lights for Children tea party on Sunday, September 30th in the beautiful Bates Reading Room of the Boston Public Library.

    The 2012 honorees are:

     

    “Literary Lights for Children” seeks to raise awareness of children’s literature, promote literacy, honor children’s authors, and raise money for the Boston Public Library’s children’s services and collections. Students selected from Boston area schools introduce and present the awards to each of the honored authors. The honorees then discuss their writing careers and share their love of books with the audience of over 400 children and adults. Tea refreshments are served.

    Tickets are $40 children, $60 adults

    There will be authors: Kevin Hawkes, Christopher Paolini, Mitali Perkins (Rickshaw Girl!), and Gary Schmidt.
