  • From My Dog Walker: Dog Theft in West Newton

From My Dog Walker: Dog Theft in West Newton

Lost (stolen?) Newton Dog Has Been Found

A client’s dog-pal went missing from their yard in West Newton last night and was MIA through the morning hours today. The pup’s Mom was called by the Quincy VCA  letting her know that they had her dog….
Lost (stolen?) Newton Dog Has Been Found
    Quincy……
    Some additionally suspect information:
My pal was brought in by two young men (possibly in their 20’s) who supposedly found him in someone’s yard.  Then, rather than bring him to the Newton Police / a Newton animal hospital, they opted to bring him back to Quincy with them.  Finally, somewhere along the way my pal’s ID tag “fell off”… yet his rabies tag was coincidentally still fully intact.
Thankfully this pal of mine is microchipped. Although these chips do not serve a GPS-like function, it is in all likelihood the only reason my buddy wasn’t sold to some unsuspecting other family, who had no idea that they just purchased / adopted a stolen Samoyed. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if these “good samaritans” have a microchip scanner (purchasable on Amazon for under $100) and after learning that my pal is chipped, brought him to the VCA since he was not sellable after all.
I am not trying to scare anyone….  On the other hand, if your pal is not yet microchipped please consider getting the procedure done!!  It is quick, inexpensive, and could truly save your buddy.

WE ALL LOVE NEWTON SO MUCH, NOBODY WANTS TO MOVE

Anyone Planning to sell their Single-Family Home, is in the Driver’s Seat

    Newton Real Estate Market

By Marie Presti, The Presti Group

For the past several years, anyone wishing to move to Newton, one of the safest cities in Massachusetts, has been in for some slim pickings in the city’s hot real estate market. So far, this year is no exception. Single-family homeowners, in this glorious location, remain in the driver’s seat. And they are steering a luxury car with sophisticated, unlimited options.

So if a developer comes knocking at your door, or if you receive a “there are people interested in buying a home in your neighborhood” letter, look before you leap. Although you might be thinking about selling, take your time. Make sure you are getting the right offer, with the best terms. Many times, putting your home on the open market can provide better results than going for the first offer presented off market.

For buyers, though, the picture isn’t so pretty. A dismally low supply of single-family homes will continue throughout 2017, making it difficult for consumers to find a good deal. Buyers will need to hone their search criteria and act quickly the second they find a place they want. And be ready for combat. The bidding wars have already begun, despite winter being a traditionally slow season.

Findings from the Greater Boston Association of Realtors (GBAR) indicate the average number of days on the market for single-family homes in Newton has decreased 16 percent (from 57 days in 2015 to 48 days in 2016). Sales dropped 8.3 percent, from 2015 to 2016.  There was also a significant decline in the number of these homes available in 2015 and 2016: 661, vs. 551, respectively. At the end of last month, there were only 66 single-family houses on the market in Newton. This represents a 27 percent decrease, compared to the same period last year.

The GBAR report also indicates that despite rising condo and single-family homes sales on the rise outside of Newton, single-family home sales here have actually decreased by 1.4 percent in 2016.The reason for this slip, is that there are less homes being sold at the high end these days, in addition to a low inventory to choose from. Condos are gaining ground, due to the new construction town homes, with closed sales increasing by 3.2 percent. (The median price of condos rose nearly 13 percent from 2015 to 2016.) For people being priced out of the single- family home market, or who can’t manage the maintenance of their existing property here, condos are becoming a viable option for people who love Newton.

The median sales price for condos in Newton increased 12.6 percent to $698,000. This is due to a growing number of developers who are building luxury townhouses that are becoming an alternative to more expensive, new construction single-families. The number of days on the market for condos here stayed even in 2015 and 2016 at 44 days. This leveling off is due to new construction timelines. After all, people have to wait for the condos to be built before they can move in.

Despite being in the dead of a cold, snowy winter, home sales show no sign of slowing down. Anyone selling (or attempting to buy a single-family home) in Newton should gear up now. In the words of the late, great David Bowie, “…Take your protein pills and put your helmet on…”

  • Newton Ranks #21: Best Cities to Live In

Newton Ranks #21: Best Cities to Live In

A host of factors play an important role in deciding where to move, including the quality of schools, the strength of the local economy and job market, safety, culture, and even climate.

To determine America’s best cities to live in, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data on the 550 U.S. cities with populations of 65,000 or more as measured by the U.S. Census Bureau. Based on a range of variables, including crime rates, employment growth, access to restaurants and attractions, educational attainment, and housing affordability, 24/7 Wall St. identified America’s 50 Best Cities to Live.

    21. Newton, Massachusetts
    > Population: 88,809
    > Median home value: $809,700
    > Poverty rate: 4.3%
    > Pct. with at least a bachelor’s degree: 76.6%

More than three-quarters of adults in Newton have at least a bachelor’s degree, high even compared with Massachusetts as a whole — the state’s over 40% college attainment rate is the highest of any state. A college degree is one of the surest paths to a high income, and Newton residents are some of the nation’s wealthiest. Even after adjusting for the city’s relatively high cost of living, the typical household earns $114,201 annually — eighth highest nationwide.

As is common in cities with high-income populations, Newton’s violent crime rate of 83 incidents per 100,000 residents is one of the lowest in the country. It is a fraction of the national violent crime rate of 373 incidents per 100,000 people.

Barry’s Bootcamp Open Winter 2017 at The Street

BARRY’S BOOTCAMP WILL OPEN WINTER, 2017

Barry's Bootcamp Open Winter 2017 at The Street

What has been dubbed “the best workout in the world” is coming to The Street. Barry’s Bootcamp is slated to open at the property in Winter, 2017 at 55 Boylston Street Chestnut Hill, MA, neighboring Bernard’s restaurant, Pottery Barn and lululemon.

Barry’s Bootcamp first originated in Los Angeles in 1998, delivering The Best Workout in the World® to a legendary following, including A-list celebs, models and even Olympic athletes. Through its franchise business model, locals Dustin Martin and Brian Weller opened its first Boston location in Downtown Crossing in 2013.

The studio’s signature workouts can burn up to 1,000 calories in just one hour through 25-30 minutes of interval cardiovascular treadmill routines and 25-30 minutes of strength training utilizing a range of equipment, including free weights, resistance bands, and medicine balls. Muscle groups and even workout segments vary throughout the week so that no one class is ever the same. The technique works to “shock” the body in the most efficient and effective way, improving students’ cardiovascular system, helping with weight loss and building muscle. World-class trainers lead the high-energy classes in a studio with dim, red lighting and a booming sound system.

The location at The Street will feature a 50-person studio, fully stocked men’s and women’s locker rooms, and a customized Barry’s Fuel Bar, offering healthy smoothies, juices and snacks. Classes will be available seven days a week and offered at both drop-in rates, class packs and “academies.”

“While we still have a build-out ahead of us, we’re looking forward to unleashing the red room on The Street in 2017!” says co-owner Dustin Martin.
