    SIEMENS FOUNDATION AND DISCOVERY EDUCATION CONVENE TOP INNOVATORS AND NEXT GENERATION OF STEM LEADERS FOR EXCLUSIVE WEBCAST EVENT

    2014 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology

     — ‘Innovators Lounge,’ Hosted by CNN Anchor Fredricka Whitfield, Will Bring Together Student Scholars and Top Executives from Kiva.org, StreetLight Data, RISE and 3D Robotics for Live, Interactive Mentoring Event — 

    WHAT:         

    On Monday, December 8, the Siemens Foundation and Discovery Education will host an exclusive live event convening a select group of today’s top innovators with scholar high school students that have advanced as National Finalists in the 2014 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, the nation’s premier research competition for high school students. The event will be live streamed to students and educators around the country.

    Host and CNN Anchor Fredricka Whitfield will lead a lively, virtual conversation between the student finalists and top executives from companies on the cutting edge of changing the way we live, work and play, including:

    • Chris Anderson, co-founder and CEO of 3D Robotics
    • Suneel Gupta, co-founder and CEO of RISE
    • Jessica Jackley, co-founder and former CMO of Kiva.org
    • Laura Schewel, founder and CEO of StreetLight Data

    These movers and shakers, whose innovations have changed the way we live and made the world a better place, will share their insights and personal stories of success. The guest speakers will answer questions from the student finalists and engage a nationwide virtual audience with their unique perspectives on business, entrepreneurship and the future needs of today’s world. Attendees will get an inside look at what motivates 21st century innovators and hear their invaluable advice to our next generation of scholars.

    014 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology

     

    The Siemens Competition

    This year marks the 15th Anniversary of the Siemens Competition, the nation’s premier research competition for high school students.  A record 2,263 students submitted a total of 1,784 projects for consideration – 408 students were named semifinalists and 97 were named regional finalists.  Entries are judged at the regional level by esteemed scientists from six leading research universities which host the regional competitions:  California Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame and The University of Texas at Austin.  The twenty regional winners will now compete at the national level, representing six individual and six team research projects.

    Newton Family Singers with New Philharmonia Orchestra

    Newton Family Singers are honored to have been invited to perform with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, at Celebrations!, this Sunday, December 7, at 3pm at the First Baptist Church in Newton Centre. NFS will join the orchestra, along with the Chestnut Hill School Chorus, and the Boston Ballet School for a program filled with music, dance, and joy of the season.

    The three-song finale of the program has been orchestrated by our own Chris Eastburn, NFS Artistic Director, and is a tribute to civil rights heroes Pete Seeger and Nelson Mandela.

    The latest Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Educator Evaluation found 98 percent of Newton teachers were “proficient” or “exemplary.”

    • Needs Improvement: 1.7 percent
    • Unsatisfactory: 0.3

    Of the 372 school districts evaluated, an average of 86.5 percent of teachers were proficient.

    This is the second year the state has conducted the rankings.

    Cook Restaurant Kicks Off Month-Long Fundraiser for Boston Children’s Hospital with Ben and Tonya Mezrich

    WHAT:

    Cook, the award-winning restaurant located in Newton, MA is kicking off its annual month-long holiday fundraiser for Boston Children’s Hospital with a special “Cook for Charity” event featuring New York Times best-selling author Ben Mezrich and fashion designer Tonya Mezrich. On Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM the husband and wife duo will roll up their sleeves and get cooking with Executive Chef/Owner Paul Turano where they’ll be serving up flatbreads for the nonprofit all evening long.

    In addition to Cook’s signature menu items, the restaurant will be serving “The Mezrich” special, a Hawaiian flatbread with house smoked ham, bacon, pineapple, tomato sauce and mozzarella designed by The Mezrichs themselves. 100% of sales from each $15 “The Mezrich” flatbread will be donated to the Patient and Family Resource Room, a program that helps provide services to families whose children are being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital Oncology and Hematology Center.

    Ben Mezrich has authored twelve books, including the wildly successful “Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions,” which spent sixty-three weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and sold over 2 million copies in fifteen languages. The book was adapted into the movie The Social Network –written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher – and Golden Globes for best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay, best score, and was nominated for 8 Oscars, winning 3 including best Adapted Screenplay. Ben will have signed copies of his latest book,“SEVEN WONDERS,” available for purchase the evening of the event.

    Tonya Mezrich is co-fashion designer for mike&ton, jewelry designer for her own label Jewel Design By Tonya and NECN‘s fashion expert. The Mezrichs have two small children and are regular supporters of Boston Children’s Hospital to which the event will help raise money and awareness.
