  • Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s 14th Annual Gala

    Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s 14th Annual Gala

“Let’s Paint the Town Red” Event to Benefit New Cardiovascular Center

    When: Saturday, May 11, 2013
Where: The Westin Copley Place in Boston.
Why: To Help Build a New Cardiovascular Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Since 2000, the annual Gala has raised significant funds to help Newton-Wellesley Hospital build new/enhanced facilities, add programs and services, and deliver the very highest quality care to the community. This year’s event will help build a new Cardiovascular Center at the hospital.
Cardiovascular disease is still the number one cause of death in America for both men and women. In fact, cardiovascular disease takes the lives of more than 2,150 Americans each day – an average of 1 death every 40 seconds. It is the cause of death of more adults annually than from all cancers combined.

The Gala Chairs are Minou and Peter Palandjian of Belmont, and the Co-Chairs Committee includes Deborah and Bill Elfers, Tracey and John Cannistraro, Kim & Drew Conway, and Shirley and Chris Kelly, all of Wellesley, and Daniela and Mike Muldowney of Dover.

    It’s Time to Act

Given the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in our community, plans are underway to expand the existing, solid foundation of cardiovascular care at Newton-Wellesley to create an even more robust, comprehensive program. These efforts will result in a new Cardiovascular Center to open in 2015.
This multidisciplinary Center will be a clinical collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiology Division and will be dedicated to the early diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease. Patients will have access to expert medical teams, including cardiologists, vascular surgeons, electrophysiologists and interventional radiologists from both Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Mass General—all in one convenient location.
“We have set a campaign goal of $6,000,000 to help build the Cardiovascular Center and we are hoping to raise $850,000+ at the Gala,” said Joan Archer, president, NWH Charitable Foundation. “The Cardiovascular Center represents an important step in bringing the highest-quality care to our community—the right care in the right place at the right time.”

Older Drivers and Safety Issues: Free Seminar on How to Talk to Them

For many older adults, driving is a symbol of freedom and independence and represents the ability to maintain connections and actively participate in the community.

However, driving abilities can change over time due to declining vision, decreased strength, stiff joints, slowed reaction times, medical conditions or medication usage. Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among 65 to 74 year olds and are the second leading cause, after falls, among 75 to 84-year- olds.

On Wednesday, December 5, Newton-Wellesley Hospital will offer a free seminar called

Tips for Talking with Older Drivers

The event will be held from 6:30 – 8:00 pm

in the Bowles Conference Center Second Floor

    Newton-Wellesley Hospital, 2014 Washington Street.

Talking with an older driver about stopping or altering driving can be a difficult and challenging conversation. This seminar offers easy-to-use, practical information to help families advise their loved ones on whether it is time to limit or give up driving. The seminar will cover topics like warning signs, conversation openers, how to construct a caring, effective conversation about driving, selecting the right messenger, and finding other forms of transportation so your loved ones can continue to be active and remain part of the community.

Debbie Kerrigan, MS, OTR/L, a senior occupational therapist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, will facilitate the program. She has been involved in driving rehabilitation and older driver safety for the last five years.

Last spring, Debbie was a recipient of a mini-grant from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA). Under that grant, she developed two different educational presentations targeted toward older drivers, as well as physicians.

Light refreshments will be served. To reserve your seat for this free event email carefinder@partners.org or call 617.243.5900. For more information, please visit www.nwh.org/community.

    1) FREE Prostate Cancer Screening

Newton-Wellesley Hospital will offer a free prostate cancer screening on Tuesday, September 20, 5:00-7:00 pm, in the Wikstrom Surgical Center, located at 2014 Washington Street, Newton. The screening is sponsored by Newton-Wellesley Hospital urologists.

According to the Prostate Cancer Education Council, a non-profit coalition of physicians, health educators, scientists, and patients, prostate cancer is second only to skin cancer as the most common type of cancer among American men. Among men who have a family history of prostate cancer, chances of contracting the disease increase by 50 percent.

Doctors say the best way to beat prostate cancer is by detecting it at its earliest stage. Jeffrey S. Lamont, MD, Chief of Urology at Newton-Wellesley, states, “Early detection and treatment of prostate cancer can lead to complete recovery. If caught early, survival rates are 90 percent or higher.”

Dr. Lamont recommends that men over the age of 40 should be screened annually. Screenings take about 10 minutes and include a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE) done by a trained professional. “Prostate examinations take only minutes,” says Dr. Lamont. “Men should make it a priority to get screened – an annual prostate exam can save a man’s life.”

Appointments are required. To take advantage of the free screening at Newton-Wellesley,call 617-243-5900 or email carefinder@partners.org.
