    Panties Benefit Seven Bar Foundation

Equinox, the upscale fitness and high performance lifestyle leader, is introducing the perfect holiday gift for the active activist. Equinox is partnering with Empowered by You to offer the Empowered by Equinox panty line.

    Panties Benefit Seven Bar Foundation

The limited edition, holiday 3-pack of perfect everyday seamless panties, available for $60 at all four Boston Equinox locations, are designed with patented silicone flocking technology to prevent riding and sliding. For every pair purchased, Empowered by You will donate 20% of its net profits to the Seven Bar Foundation which is committed to empowering women across the globe by distributing loans to outstanding microfinance institutions all over the world.

    Panties Benefit Seven Bar Foundation

Microloans are loans in amounts of less than $50,000 which help small business owners start, support or grow their business, and is especially prominent in countries with high poverty rates.  The Seven Bar Foundation supports small business women in Sri Lanka (where the panties are manufactured), India, Guatemala, the United States and several other countries. Women who have received microfinance loans from the Seven Bar Foundation have been able to get their businesses off the ground and gain financial independence, therefore breaking the cycle of poverty for their families.

Instead of seeing lingerie as a tool of seduction, Empowered by You and Empowered by Equinox believe that intimates are a form of female empowerment– empowering the woman who wears them knowing she has supported an aspiring business woman into self-sufficiency and for the women she supports. It’s not just a panty.  It’s a mission.

The panties will be available at The Shop @ Equinox beginning December 3rd, 2014 until supplies last.

    Go Green!
    CATALOG CANCELING INITIATIVE

My elementary school is doing this via our Social Action Committee but I wanted to share with everyone in Newton and invite you all to Go GREEN!

    Go Green Catalog Canceling Initiative

As the holiday season is upon us, most households begin to receive an abundance of unwanted sales catalogs.

Over 19 billion catalogs are mailed per year in the USA, using:

    • 53 million trees
    • 3 billion gallons of water
    • Enough energy to supply 1.2 million homes annually
    • CO2 emissions equal to 2 million cars annually

The production of catalogs consumes a vast amount of our planet’s precious resources, and 98% of these catalogs do not even generate sales.

    How does the initiative work?

    1. Collect catalogs that you want to cancel.

    2. Cancel the catalogs by:

    • calling the 1800 number on the back, or
    • use the website www.catalogchoice.org where you can cancel many at one time or
    • download the following app  https://www.paperkarma.com/  to scan and cancel

    3. Go online at Catalog Canceling Drive and submit the total number of catalogs you and your child have cancelled.  Deadline to enter isJanuary 15th

    4. SAVE and SEND the catalogs in with your child on the morning of January 16th (the day of the January Town Meeting).

Please have you child/children help in as much of this process as possible.
The classrooms that have cancelled the most catalogs will win a prize.  In addition, to help the children understand the impact of this initiative, each child will have the chance to go onto the stage to add their catalogs to the stack of cancelled catalogs.

NNHS Principal to be Superintendent in North Andover

    Dear North Community:

I am writing let you know that I have chosen to go to North Andover as their next Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2015.

Please know that the Newton North community will always hold a very special place in my heart.  Over the last 9 years, I have had the privilege to lead this school through many challenges, opportunities and transitions.   I have grown so much as a leader and a person, none of which would have been possible without the support of this amazing community.  I am so proud of this school and all the work we have done together to ensure that all students have equal access to the excellent educational experiences within our walls.

I know David Fleishman will be in touch shortly after the holiday break to update you on the search process.  He has told me he is eager to move as quickly as possible to ensure that the search for the next principal at Newton North is as thorough and comprehensive as possible.

I look forward to working with our wonderful staff, students and families over the next six months. Thank you, as always, for partnering with me to support the incredible students of Newton North.  I hope you enjoy the upcoming break, and Happy New Year.

Los Angeles-based brand Splendid® is excited to announce their second annual nationwide holiday book drive for Milk + Bookies benefiting the National Relief Charities December 4th, 2014 – January 4th, 2015. Donated books will be used to stock eight school libraries at the Pine Ridge Reservation located in southwest South Dakota, an area that is among the poorest in the U.S. with a significant population living below the poverty line. This is such a worthy cause and we would so appreciate if you would share with your readers!

To add to the giving-back experience, donators are invited to inscribe their donated books with a description about what they love about reading. Plus each participant will receive an I DONATED sticker, to reinforce the amazing feeling that comes with giving to someone else. To sweeten the deal, those that donate 5 or more books will receive 50% off one item from Splendid.

Support the Chinese Historical Society of New England

I’d like to invite you to participate in giving back, by supporting the Chinese Historical Society of New England (CHSNE) and our efforts to document, promote and preserve the history and legacy of Chinese Americans in New England.

    Donate here.

    Meet Lucy

Meet Lucy, who has embarked on a mission to organize CHSNE’s archive/storage room this Fall/Winter……

“My name is Lucy Asako Boltz, and I’ve been working to organize and catalogue CHSNE’s archive.  I graduated from Brown University (Ethnic Studies) and have previous experience in archives and research with Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI as well as on Chinese restaurants in the U.S.

I’m working to help make the reference materials open to students and scholars interested in learning more about Chinese/Chinese-American history in New England as well as to preserve the archival photographs, garments and documents in fair condition.

I have come across a number of artifacts that illustrate part of the story of Chinese in New England, especially Boston’s Chinatown.  The library and archive houses dissertations on Boston’s Chinatown development, Asian American newspapers and magazine publications from the 1970s and 80s, and one of my favorite finds–a 1960s electric iron from a Chinese-owned laundry!”

Please help Lucy continue the progress she is making and make a donation today! CHSNE is in need of archival quality storage and shelving–$25 will help move a bag of items to an acid-free box, $100 will help us purchase and install a storage shelf, and $250 will help scan and restore and oversized banquet/school photo.

Your participation in giving back through CHSNE will help ensure that future generations will know about and appreciate the important contributions that the Chinese have had in New England.

Susan Chinsen, the Managing Director of Chinese Historical Society of New England, is a Newton North High School alumna.
