    Renowned Saxophonist Fred Lipsius Kicks Off

    JAZZ @ The Arsenal returns this October for another fantastic season of live music at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown.

    Fred Lipsius, original saxophonist, arranger and conductor with Blood, Sweat & Tears (1967-71), and his quartet will open this season’s series on Monday, October 12, at 7:30PM at the Arsenal Center’s Black Box Theater.Lipsius has performed with jazz greats Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk, Zoot Sims, Eddie Gomez, Al Foster, George Mraz, Larry Willis, Randy Brecker, Rodney Jones, plus a number of prominent Berklee College of Music faculty. He has written music for and performed on over 30 CDs as both a leader and sideman. Fred is currently an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he’s been teaching full-time since 1984.

    The series continues on November 16 with the Kris Adams Quintet. Kris began singing on stage in a touring children’s theater as a young teenager and had her first professional gigs at the age of 19 in Connecticut, singing in a latin-jazz band that the late saxophonist Tom Chapin was a member of. Her recently released third album entitled “Longing” (Jazzbird Records) is in collaboration with trumpeter/arranger, Greg Hopkins. Kris currently teaches at Berklee and is author of the book “Sing Your Way Through Theory” (Hal Leonard).

    The final date of 2015 will be a holiday themed concert of A Jazzy Christmas with The John Baboian Quintet.  Jazz at the Arsenal’s Artistic Director, John Baboian, brings his quartet into the Arsenal for a concert of music inspired by the Season. Guitarist/ Composer, John Baboian, has been on the faculty at the Berklee College of Music in Boston for 35 years. He has been organizing the Jazz at the Arsenal series since its inception 8 years ago. This concert will feature unique compositions and arrangements of standard holiday fare.

The events are free of charge and are generally held on Wednesday nights. The evening includes pre-presentation refreshments and hors d’oeuvres as well as a Q&A session with the presenter.

    Forgirlsake Women’s Doubles Tennis Open Charity Event

    Today a Newton-based charity kicks off registration for the third annual Forgirlsake Women’s Doubles Tennis Open.  The event takes place Sept. 19; rain date is Sept. 20.  To accommodate busy schedules, registrants have a choice of two sessions:  9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.  (Ambitious players can sign up for both.)  The tournament offers fast, competitive play (3.0-4.0) in a supportive environment and no partner is necessary (one can be provided).  The registration fee is a minimum $55 donation per player, per session.  For an additional $10, participants can purchase a professional “coached warm up,” a service that is back by popular demand this year.  Visitwww.forgirlsake.org/tennis to sign up.  Spots are limited and registration is on a first come, first served basis.  The event will take place at Newton North High School for the third consecutive year.

    Forgirlsake Women’s Doubles Tennis Open Charity Event

    Held for the first time in 2013, the Women’s Doubles Tennis Open is the signature fundraising event for Forgirlsake (FGS).  For nearly a decade, the organization has focused on sending girls to school in developing countries.  By helping young women finish their education, FGS enables them to reach leadership positions and increase their earning power.  Money raised helps pay for a range of items including books, computers, scholarships and building materials.  This year, proceeds will benefit the Second Chance Scholarship Project.  This new initiative is developed in partnership with the Pathways Development Initiative, a non-profit group dedicated to helping girls build sustainable livelihoods.  FGS will be working with the Uganda-based organization for the next three years to put bright, motivated young women back in school who have dropped out, due to pregnancy or lack of funds.  Made possible by Newton North High School, Newton Tennis and local business sponsors, the tournament is spearheaded by FGS co-founder, Stephanie Zelman, of Newtonville.  Other organizers are area residents Sami O’Reilly, Deb Cronin, Noura Guermazi, Emilie Kendall and Lisa Rinkus.

    Free Soccer Celebration in Boston

    What:                   Santander Bank, N.A., in partnership with the New England Revolution and The Esplanade Association, will host a free and open-to-the-public Soccer Celebration featuring a New England Revolution Academy public clinic, with a skills and drills demonstration and instruction from athletes and coaches at Boston’s Ebersol Field on the Charles River Esplanade.

    The Santander Soccer Celebration will include the chance to meet a host of Revolution players, including star forward and New England native Charlie Davies; ticket giveaway opportunities, FIFA on Xbox with the New England Revolution Battalion; interactive inflatable soccer games; refreshments and more.

    Just in time for back-to-school, the event will also offer parents and kids the opportunity to learn more about the Bank’s Santander Soccer Scholars program, which recognizes the academic achievements of New England youth with an opportunity to win a VIP match day experience throughout the season. Davies serves as the champion and official face of the 2015 Santander Soccer Scholars program and will be signing autographs for fans.

    Disability Awareness Book Club

    Understanding Our Differences has started a Disability Awareness Book Club. It meets the first Monday of the month at Newton Free Library, 7:00 pm in Meeting Room A.Disability Awareness Book Club

    We’re taking the summer off, and due to Labor Day, our first meeting in the fall will be on Thursday, Sept. 10th. The book to be discussed is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

    The purpose of the club is to engage in thought provoking discussion centered on books with a disability theme: fiction that portrays a character with a disability; nonfiction about living with a disability, and biographies, autobiographies or memoirs about living with a disability.
