    Join us this Thanksgiving morning at the 17th Annual Boston Volvo 5k Road Race and work up an appetite by running or walking for those who can’t!

    Time: 7:30 am registration, 9:00 am start

    Location: Boston Volvo, 75 North Beacon St., Brighton, Mass. Parking available at Stop & Shop behind Boston Volvo and at the garage on Guest St.

    Your participation in the Volvo 5K Road Race provides help for today and hope for tomorrow through education, support, advocacy, and research funded by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater New England Chapter. Programs and services funded by the National MS Society make a huge difference to the nearly 18,000 people and their families in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont who must live with MS every day.

    Cook Cooks for Charity with New Celebrity Series

    Cook Cooks for Charity with New Celebrity Series 

    WHAT:

    Cook, the highly acclaimed American bistro located in Newton, MA, will begin its new ‘Cook for Charity’ celebrity chef series by welcoming WCVB-TV host Anthony Everett of “Chronicle.”

    On Wednesday, October 1st, 2014 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM.Everett will roll up his sleeves and get cooking with Executive Chef/Owner Paul Turano as they serve up the special “Everett Flatbread,” designed by Everett himself from the open kitchen, wood-fired grill.

    The five ingredient flatbread (representing WCVB-TV’s Channel 5) will consist of: sausage, mushrooms, pepperoni, onions and meatballs with 100% of flatbread sales going directly to the Multiple Sclerosis Society which works to improve quality of life for individuals and families affected by MS; and raises funds for cutting-edge MS research to stop disease progression, restore lost function and end MS forever.

    Anthony Everett is the Emmy Award winning co-anchor of WCVB-TV’s nightly newsmagazine “Chronicle,” the nation’s longest running local newsmagazine. Everett has been honored with multiple Emmy Awards, including Emmys for his work as host of “Chronicle” in 2010, for his reporting on the recycling industry in 2009, and for a report on special education in 2008. In 2000, Everett won the “Best Newscast,” award from the Associated Press for his work in the early evening. He has won numerous additional awards including the National Headliner Award and Massachusetts Broadcasters Association First Place award for spot news coverage.

    Everett has been heavily involved with the MS Society, and the night of cooking will be one of several celebrity chef events at Cook, all of which will raise money and awareness about a charity chosen by the specific celebrity of the evening.

    Arthritis Foundation New England region To Honor Two MEDICAL Leaders At the 20th annual Physician Achievement Award Dinner

    The Arthritis Foundation New England Region will honor Mark R. Belsky, M.D. and Martha Skinner, M.D. with the Dr. Marian Ropes Award at the 20th Annual Physician Achievement Award Dinner on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Boston Marriott Newton.

    Dr. Marian Ropes was a pioneer and national leader in the field of rheumatology, and the first female medical resident of Massachusetts General Hospital. Selected by a panel of distinguished medical leaders, this award is given annually to two highly regarded physicians, a rheumatologist and an orthopaedic surgeon, for excellence in arthritis care and leadership in the fight against arthritis.

    Mark R. Belsky, M.D.

    Dr. Belsky is a clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and managing partner of Hand Surgery, PC at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He has practiced hand and upper extremity surgery since 1981.

    Dr. Don Goldenberg, Chief of Rheumatology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital and a 2008 Dr. Marian Ropes Award recipient said, “I cannot think of a more worthy recipient. As a rheumatologist, Mark and I have worked closely together for more than 25 years at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He has provided outstanding and innovative care to thousands of patients in our community and has been a leader for hand orthopedic techniques, research and education in New England. I congratulate Mark on this well-deserved honor.”

    Dr. Martha Skinner

    Dr. Martha Skinner is a professor emerita of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. She is director of special projects in the Amyloidosis Center at Boston Medical Center. “Martha Skinner is truly a deserving recipient of this award. Her illustrious career has spanned almost half a century and includes many milestones spanning the gamut of medical science and education from bench to bedside, to the benefit of numerous patients, students and colleagues.  Martha’s talents also include developing a group of internationally recognized investigators who have continued her legacy of achievement. Congratulations to Martha on this honor!”  said Dr. Rob Simms, Chief of Rheumatology, Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine and a 2012 Dr. Marian Ropes Award recipient.

    “We are grateful for the impact both Drs. Belsky and Skinner have made on patients and the field of arthritis as a whole,” said Steve Evangelista, President and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation New England Region. “Over the course of their careers they have altered for the better, numerous lives of individuals and families impacted by arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation is honored to have the opportunity to recognize these two physicians for their many achievements.”

    The Physician Achievement Award Dinner will take place on Wednesday evening, September 17, 2014. The reception and silent auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and award presentation from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Boston Marriott Newton, 2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton.

    Laura Carlo, morning program host from WCRB 99.5 FM, will be the master of ceremonies.

    Child Passenger Safety Week is September 14th – 20th and  September 20th is National Seat Check Saturday. In Honor of this day the Car Seat Technicians from the Newton Police Department will be performing installations and inspections for all parents, grandparents etc., who would like their child carseat inspected.

    There is no fee and there will also be a handful of free carseats available for families in need. The Installations and Inspections will be performed on Saturday from 8:00 am -11:00 am at the War Memorial Drive located at Newton’s City Hall.

    The Chinese Historical Society of New England (CHSNE) annual meeting and dinner is just a few weeks away—Wednesday, September 24—at China Pearl restaurant in Boston.  

    This year, CHSNE will be honoring Boston Dragon Boat Festival, Inc for its 35-year dedication to promoting and sharing a Chinese tradition on the Charles River, across New England and beyond! Additionally, CHSNE will be hosting John Kuo Wei (Jack) Tchen—co-founder and senior historian at Museum of Chinese in America, co-author/editor of Yellow Peril: An Archive of Anti-Asian Fear (2014), and senior historian to New-York Historical Society’s new exhibit opening later this month–Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion.
