  • We Art Boston Auction and Event to Benefit Boston Marathon Victims

We Art Boston Auction and Event to Benefit Boston Marathon Victims

We Art Boston is a new non profit in response to the Boston Marathon bombing started by Joe and Susan (Hass) McKendry.

Their kids, Elsie and Owen, are close in age to Martin Richard, the 8 year-old who died that day.  When they lived in the South End, they spent countless hours at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.  As so many parents felt in those hours and days afterwards, they were certain that it very easily could’ve been them.

They were anxious to find a way to help.  As an artist, Joe had initially planned on auctioning off a few of his paintings and sending the proceeds to aid the victims.  But he quickly decided to try contacting some of his author/illustrator friends to gauge their interest in contributing to a larger auction of children’s book artwork, and the response was overwhelming positive.

They have collected over 60 pieces of art, generously donated by some of the most beloved children’s book authors/illustrators including Ian Falconer (Olivia), Mo Willems (Knuffle Bunny), David Macaulay (The Way Things Work), and many more.

    We Art Boston

Of course, the trauma of the bombing impacted the lives of so many children in ways that went beyond physical injuries, and they recognized the need to acknowledge this, too.  It was important for them to find a way to contribute to the healing of the entire community.

From October 10 – 24, we’ll be holding an online auction of the work to benefit the Emergency & Trauma Center at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Please visit their site to bid.

The work will also be on display on the Rose Kennedy Greenway directly across from the Aquarium on October 20th from 11 am to 3 pm (rain date 10/27).

Join them for a day of family fun, with live music, author readings, book signings, and art activities led by the authors and illustrators of We Art Boston planned. Bring your favorite stuffed animal to have his/her portrait drawn by a professional artist.

  • Peirce Elementary School Playground Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser

Peirce Elementary School Playground Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser

Peirce Elementary School is raising money for a new playground and everyone is welcome to use it when it is complete.

But the price tag is high. In order to get an inclusive playground with a rubber surface that allow for wheelchairs, the cost is $175,000. So far, Peirce is almost half way there. But We Need Your Help!

Peirce Elementary School Playground Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser

We’re holding a Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser on Saturday, October 5th from 11 am to 4pm. Please buy a pumpkin and help us get closer to our goal.

This is the playground we hope to install. If we don’t meet our fundraising goal over the next 6 six weeks, we will have to use woodchips instead of the rubber surface. Woodchips won’t allow for inclusion and are not as safe for falls as the rubber surface. Also, part of the playground structure might have to be eliminated.

Peirce Elementary School Playground Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser

Figuring out an idea play structure was a team effort. Peirce students weighed in with ideas such as these:

  • Volunteers and Toys Needed for Birthday Wishes

Volunteers and Toys Needed for Birthday Wishes

Birthday Wishes is pleased to announce the opening of our new Birthday-in-a-Box office in Lexington, MA, on the campus of the Cotting School. We are delighted that our long-time volunteer and Party Coordinator, Mary Heveran, will serve as our new Birthday-in-a-Box Program Manager. Welcome Mary!
For the past several years, we have experienced significant growth in our Birthday Box program, which now provides more than 150 boxes per month state-wide to homeless children. The program was created in 2005 for those children living in domestic violence shelters, scattered sites, hotels, and other locations which cannot accommodate Birthday Wishes volunteers. It allows Birthday Wishes to reach homeless children in almost any living situation. Moving this program to a separate facility will greatly increase our capacity to meet the growing needs of this program, while offering improved efficiency and oversight.
The Lexington office needs volunteers and toys:
    • Office volunteers to assemble Birthday Boxes, pull and wrap birthday gifts, inventory donations and deliver Birthday Boxes.
    • Brand new toys (in original, unopened packaging) for children of all ages, as well as Target, Old Navy, TJMaxx and Marshalls gift cards for our teens.
If you would like to donate or volunteer, please contact Mary Heveran at mary@birthdaywishes.org or866-388-9474 x12.

  • Newton 9/11 Memorial Committee

    Newton 9/11 Memorial Committee

    The Newton 9/11 Memorial Committee

Our goal is to create a 9/11 memorial for Newton. Not just to memorialize the eight people from Newton who died that day, but to commemorate the heroism of the police, the firefighters, and the everyday citizens who reached out to help each other.

To remember with sadness the lives cut short and with admiration the bravery displayed by the first responders who selflessly ran into the Towers and the Pentagon to try to rescue others, and the passengers of Flight 93, who rose up together to stop one leg of the attack. It seems that in every generation there is a moment…where there is a “before” and an “after”. Where you can ask anyone, and they will remember what they were doing and where they were on that day, at that hour. 9/11 is ours.

We hope you will join us in creating a memorial.
