  • Volunteers and Toys Needed for Birthday Wishes

Volunteers and Toys Needed for Birthday Wishes

Birthday Wishes is pleased to announce the opening of our new Birthday-in-a-Box office in Lexington, MA, on the campus of the Cotting School. We are delighted that our long-time volunteer and Party Coordinator, Mary Heveran, will serve as our new Birthday-in-a-Box Program Manager. Welcome Mary!
For the past several years, we have experienced significant growth in our Birthday Box program, which now provides more than 150 boxes per month state-wide to homeless children. The program was created in 2005 for those children living in domestic violence shelters, scattered sites, hotels, and other locations which cannot accommodate Birthday Wishes volunteers. It allows Birthday Wishes to reach homeless children in almost any living situation. Moving this program to a separate facility will greatly increase our capacity to meet the growing needs of this program, while offering improved efficiency and oversight.
The Lexington office needs volunteers and toys:
    • Office volunteers to assemble Birthday Boxes, pull and wrap birthday gifts, inventory donations and deliver Birthday Boxes.
    • Brand new toys (in original, unopened packaging) for children of all ages, as well as Target, Old Navy, TJMaxx and Marshalls gift cards for our teens.
If you would like to donate or volunteer, please contact Mary Heveran at mary@birthdaywishes.org or866-388-9474 x12.

  • Massachusetts Ranks High Globally in Math, Science

Massachusetts Ranks High Globally in Math, Science

Expecting the Best Yields Results in Massachusetts

If Massachusetts were a country, its eighth graders would rank second in the world in science, behind only Singapore, according to Timss — the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, which surveys knowledge and skills of fourth and eighth graders around the world. (The most recent version, in 2011, tested more than 600,000 students in 63 nations.)

Massachusetts eighth graders also did well in mathematics, coming in sixth, behind Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan. The United States as a whole came in 10th in science and 9th in math, with scores that were above the international average.

    Ambitious Goals

“Ed reform” was the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993, passed by a Democratic Legislature and signed by a Republican governor, William F. Weld.

The three core components were more money (mostly to the urban schools), ambitious academic standards and a high-stakes test that students had to pass before collecting their high school diplomas. All students were expected to learn algebra before high school.

Also noteworthy was what the reforms did not include. Parents were not offered vouchers for private schools. The state did not close poorly performing schools, eliminate tenure for teachers or add merit pay. The reforms did allow for some charter schools, but not many.

Then the state, by and large, stayed the course.

Two decades after Massachusetts passed its education reform, there is still much disagreement over what were the crucial components to its success.

Some think it was the added money; others note that successful countries operate schools at much lower costs.

  • Newton 9/11 Memorial Committee

    Newton 9/11 Memorial Committee

    The Newton 9/11 Memorial Committee

Our goal is to create a 9/11 memorial for Newton. Not just to memorialize the eight people from Newton who died that day, but to commemorate the heroism of the police, the firefighters, and the everyday citizens who reached out to help each other.

To remember with sadness the lives cut short and with admiration the bravery displayed by the first responders who selflessly ran into the Towers and the Pentagon to try to rescue others, and the passengers of Flight 93, who rose up together to stop one leg of the attack. It seems that in every generation there is a moment…where there is a “before” and an “after”. Where you can ask anyone, and they will remember what they were doing and where they were on that day, at that hour. 9/11 is ours.

We hope you will join us in creating a memorial.
