    Newton Election Candidates to Debate

    The City of Newton will hold a municipal election this Fall for the offices of Mayor, Board of Aldermen and School Committee. A preliminary election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 for the offices of Ward Alderman, Ward One and Mayor. In collaboration with the Newton Chapter of the League of Women Voters, NewTV is producing a series of debates through the preliminary and general elections.

    Here is the Mayoral Debate.

    Tune in on Thursday, September 12 at 7pm for LIVE debate coverage featuring the four mayoral candidates — Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan, Tom Sheff, Jackie Gauvreau Sequeira and Mayor Setti Warren — on NewTV’s Government Channel (Comcast 9, RCN 13, Verizon 33) and streamed online on NewTV’s website.

    One Fund Tote from L.L. Bean

    Today L.L.Bean announced the launch of The One Fund Boston Tote, a limited-edition tote made from the tarp used to protect the Fenway Park infield during its 100th anniversary in 2012.

    Starting Friday, September 6, the totes will be available in limited quantities at Massachusetts L.L.Bean retail stores (Dedham, Mansfield and Burlington) and at the flagship L.L.Bean store in Freeport, Maine. Only 3,500 totes have been produced, and 100% of the profits will go to The One Fund Boston.

    One Day Escape (Part II)

    The Boston Rock Gym Offers Second Date for Sold Out One Day Outdoor Climbing Escape

     

    WHAT:              Due to the overwhelming success of its first one day escape, Boston Rock Gym is offering locals a second opportunity to get out and experience the city on Saturday, September 28, 2013 with its One Day Escape (Part II) in partnership with the soon to open Cook Restaurant.

    Climbers will meet at the scenic Hammond Pond, located in Newton, MA(just a short T-ride away for all the city dwellers) at 9:00AM where they’ll meet their climbing group and expert outdoor instructor for a one-of-a-kind day outdoors. The group will learn all of the basics of outdoor rock climbing including tying knots, appropriate climbing gear, proper climbing and rappelling techniques before they head out on the rocks and begin to climb.

    Following the introduction class, the group will enjoy a gourmet picnic-style lunch from the much anticipated second restaurant of Chef Paul Turano, “Cook,” located in Newton, MA. Whether an experienced indoor climber or someone just looking for a fun, this all-inclusive outdoor excursion is only $65 per person and has something for everyone!

    Deliver Meals to Jewish Elders for Rosh Hashanah

    This week, we are also planning to deliver Rosh Hashanah care packages to the homes of our Jewish elders. The visits will be taking place on Thursday and Friday of this week. If you are interested in participating, please let me know when you would be available to pick up packages at our office in JP. We are open from 9am – 5pm both days.

    We are still in need of supplies for our Emergency Food Pantry. If you are interested in making a donation, we can use the following items:

    soups, especially low-sodium (no cream based soups)
    tuna
    peanut butter
    canned fruit in juice
    baked beans
    stew
    canned pastas
    instant oatmeal
    cold cereal

    Donated items can be dropped off at our office in Jamaica Plain during the week, or during one of our weekend events (see dates listed above). Also, if you are interested in organizing a food drive of your own, we can arrange to pick up donated items.
