  • Advice from Day Middle School Nurse: Walk or Bike to School!

Advice from Day Middle School Nurse: Walk or Bike to School!

walk to school day, Day Middle School, The case for a car-free commute to school

Students across the country celebrated International Walk to School and Bike to school day earlier this month, including students (in Newton or here at F.A. Day Middle School). Thousands of students reaped the numerous health and environmental benefits that walking, biking or riding the bus to school provides.  Walking or biking to school shouldn’t just be a once a year activity though. We’re lucky in Newton that most students live close enough to walk, bike or ride a bus to school every day. Read on to learn why a car-free commute to school is a healthy way to start your day, and tips for getting going!

    • Regular physical activity, including walking to school, provides the following benefits according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
      • Builds and maintains healthy bones, muscles, and joints.
      • Helps control weight, build lean muscle and reduce fat.
      • Improves sense of self-image and autonomy.
      • Fosters healthy social and emotional development.
    • More students walking, biking or taking the bus helps reduce car congestion around the school, and reduce the environmental impact cars make.
    • Even students who take the bus benefit from walking to and from the bus stop, and the sense of independence created by getting to school on their own.
    • Students who walk and bike to school learn the rules of the road, which can help make them better pedestrians and drivers as they get older and get to school on their own.
    • Even for parents who are planning to drive to work, walking to school can be quicker than dealing with car congestion around the school building. Or if you must drive, consider dropping students off a few blocks before the school and allowing them to walk the rest of the way.
    • It’s possible to walk year round, even in New England. Break out those snow boots, hats, gloves, galoshes and rain/winter coats when the weather forecast calls for them.
    • If you’re not sure where to begin, consider making a dry run on a weekend when there isn’t pressure to be on time. Practice the route with your child so s/he knows where to go.
    • Safety first! Always wear a helmet when bicycling, riding a scooter, or anything else with wheels.

    An important note about idling:

The Massachusetts school idling regulation prohibits motor vehicle idling within 100 feet of school grounds. The fine is $100 for a first offense, and $500 for each subsequent offense.According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Idling vehicles contribute to air pollution and emit air toxins, which are pollutants known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects. Monitoring at schools has shown elevated levels of benzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other air toxics during the afternoon hour coinciding with parents picking up their children. Children’s lungs are still developing, and when they are exposed to elevated levels of these pollutants, children have an increased risk of developing asthma, respiratory problems and other adverse health effects. Limiting a vehicle’s idling time can dramatically reduce these pollutants and children’s exposure to them.”

“Turn your key, be idle free!”

NNHS Student Get Kids Biking for Food

Newton North High School student Ari Appel encourages classmates to Bike to School. His incentive? FOOD! Bike2School, Eat for Free is a program that involves the Newtonville business community as well! Every five times you bike to school, you’ll get five bucks to grab a bite at Newtonville stores.

    Here’s how it works:

Now there’s one more benefit of riding your bike to school. Get a card, and present it (along with your bike) to a bike2school official outside the theatre entrance between 7:15 and 7:45am on a school day. You’ll receive one stamp on your card. After you’ve collected five stamps, your card will be worth five bucks at Newtonville stores that support bike2school.

Just look for the “bike2school supported here” sticker in their window. Then, grab another card, and bike your way to great health, a clean environment, and another free meal.

Where to find a card: Cards can be found next to bike2school posters, at some stores that support bike2school, with a bike2school official during stamping time at the theatre entrance between 7:15 and 7:45am on schooldays, and at other locations in school.Only students, faculty, and staff of NNHS are eligible. Card expires 14 days from date stamped on card. Card may only be redeemed at participating locations. One card per purchase. Card may only be used on one item per purchase. Any remaining value does not apply to additional items or additional future purchases. Partially filled cards may not be combined. Card is void if hole-punched or otherwise tampered with. Not redeemable for cash. Terms are subject to change without notice.
Ari’s Newtonville Bike2School Facebook page has more information. He’s also featured in The Newtonite.

Newton Girls SoccerNewton Girls Soccer President’s Award

The NGS President’s Award is presented annually to one or two special high school seniors who have played soccer almost every year/season on an NGS team (or partner team like the NGS/MPS teams) during their soccer careers.  We look for players who have demonstrated the teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication required to improve their games to become the best player, teammate and NGS “ambassador” that they can be.  Additionally, it is important that the nominees have given back to the NGS community in some way.  This can be through refereeing, coaching, or volunteering in other ways.  Upon evaluating the eligible candidates, a committee consisting of NGS Board Members will select the recipients.

Award-winners receive acknowledgment at the NGS Board’s holiday party, together with an inscribed plaque and a cash award.

    Eligibility criteria:

    1. Graduating high school senior

    3. Still involved in NGS during senior year
    4. Has given back to the NGS community (e.g., refereeing, coaching, volunteering in other ways)

    Mosaics by Ariel in Needham

I met Ariel on Twitter and when I found out she lived next door in Needham, it seemed like we were fated to meet, especially after I popped over to her website and saw her amazing custom mosaics.

This piece is gorgeous. Can you imagine it larger as a kitchen backsplash? Funny you should ask, because she does that too!

When I told Ariel that this piece reminds me of Japanese brush painting and Gustuv Klimt, she said that Gustav was influenced by Asian art.

Her pieces are the epitome of form meeting function. While they are worthy of hanging on a wall as a museum piece, she also creates custom kitchen backsplashes, corporate logos, and mirrors.

    • She has a photographic memory.
    • She’s Harvard’s first mosaic artist. (Class of ’04)
    • Her family has been in the jewelry business for generations.
    • Jewelry design is also on her resume. She makes fused glass jewelry.
If anyone is interested in contacting Ariel, you can reach her here. I wish I had some empty wall space; her bubbly personality makes you want to hang out as long as possible! She’d would be very fun to work with!

Anti-Gravity Yoga Blogger Event in Boston

Did you know there is Anti-Gravity yoga (a.k.a. Cirque du Soleil yoga or maybe it’s just me that calls it that?!) in Boston? It’s “off-campus” from Newton in Southie but well worth the trip. I was invited to a Boston Parents Bloggers event sponsored by TD Bank as a way of spreading the message that banking can be a relaxing experience.

I guess it wouldn’t surprise you to find out that Joanna Keseberg, our instructor, is also a circus acrobat? She also runs trapeze and circus instruction parties for kids in Sommerville at AirCraft Aerial Arts. (I was excited to learn this! My middle daughter, PickyKidPix, wanted a trapeze birthday party last year, but I thought Reading was too far.)

What is aeriel yoga like exactly? Well … you use those long hanging loops of fabric in a myriad of ways: hanging, sitting, standing, dangling upside down, and as a support to stretch. This loop of red fabric is both strong and versatile. It can be used hammock-like to Trazan-like doing traditional poses like Shavasana, Downward Dog, and forward bends.

I have to say that lying in Shavasana while ensconced in a cocoon-like hammock was extremely relaxing (except for those with claustrophobia). The lying down poses used the fabric as a hammock but with the fabric fully extended into a swinging bubble-like contraption.

Like Vinyasa yoga, we didn’t hold poses for any length of time. The idea is to use gravity both as resistance but in a supported way.

In some ways, it reminded me of pole dancing crossed with yoga, what with all the swinging and loss of balance. Or maybe I made this connection because I was out of my element. I am used to Vinyasa yoga so this was a yoga adventure for me!

It’s also a great core workout which I wouldn’t have guessed but hauling yourself from sitting to standing repeatedly, as well as dangling off to the side on one leg while holding on with one hand does work your core rather well.

Most of us had some yoga experience — Mommycosm just got certified as a yoga instructor — but aeriel yoga was new to all of us. The folks from TD Bank were game enough to do it in their work clothes! Our instructor assured us that yoga newbies can do this and that you don’t need previous experience as a circus acrobat!

As for me, this was the only way for me to do arm balances! Dangling in the air is a lot of fun!

I attended a Boston Parent Blogger event hosted by TD Bank where I received a yoga mat and this class as part of a bloggers outreach event. I was impressed with TD Bank’s creativity pairing yoga with banking — not what a typical bank would think of! I left energized with a yoga buzz! Thanks TD Bank!
